It mentions it in my manual and last night I tried it out. I popped in a cd with a song that has different instruments playing on the left and right channels separately and indeed I can clearly hear both speakers reproducing the different sounds on each speaker. I tried out the headphones and it was the same deal.

I don't know why Acer US and Canada would mention that it would have mono speakers when the rest of the world has stereo in their 1681's. While the sound from the laptop won't win any awards for volume and clarity it is a laptop and I don't think there's any LT's out there with speakers that can rival a desktop speaker setup or home stereo layout, for what it is it does the job. When using headphones it sounds a lot better.

I'm going to do a review of my 1681 this weekend, what I like and don't like (minor things) and will post it here.

I received my Acer Aspire 1681Wlmi a few days ago. I ordered this because the 4501 was no longer available from where i bought it. The diffrences was Win XP Home vs Pro. 4 cell battery vs 8 cell. got the 60 Gig H.D. vs 40 Gig. Did get the 3 in 1 reader even though the specs on the Acer site has no mention of it. I had a major run around with parts in Texas about the proper answer on the battery issue. It would seem that they have no information about the battery. They just state that the only battery available for this unit is the 4 cell one. Onto the original post, mine has stereo as well. Actually listening to music as we speak. (Thru headphones of course because the laptop jobbies aren't with it's weight. (LOL) For what i got it for it is a decent unit. Did not want to wait for the new model because specs that i saw was a 15 in screen and a onboard video card. I ordered an extra battery at the same time. Hopefully it is the 8 cell unit.

Regarding the mono speaker out issue, I think it was just a misprint like a bunch of other things on their site. I think they meant to say mono microphone in which I read from some other site describing the unit. They probably did a cut and paste job and forgot to change it. Same goes for the 3-in-1 card reader, it's clearly on on their pictures, but no mention for the specs. This is definitely one this Acer has to improve and make more consistent.

Man your quick to reply. Regarding the battery i sure did get a run around with Acer on this issue. I even have some e-mails to prove it. BTW they state they only support the 4 cell unit as this is the one that they have tested on the computer.

Man, this battery issue really has everyone up in arms. In the manual it mentions an 8 cell battery is avail AWA the original 4 cell one.

I made a few calls the other day to Acer dealers in my area (looked them up in Acer Canada's website) and the reps all told me that it is avail. One even told me that it is the same as the 4501 battery so hopefully we can put this issue to rest. Another told me to double check with Acer Canada tech support but to use it costs money (something like $2.45 a minute) and you might not even get the answer you're looking for.

I'm gonna do some digging Monday on my day off, my 1681 is going along with me to a shop that carries the 8 cell unit and I'm going to try it out (already spoke to the guy there) and I will report here. I'll try to get some actual #'s off the 8 cell unit and if the price is right I'll have an extra battery for my LT. Also going to try out Centrino-ing also with it and I'll do another post regarding that later this weekend before I try it.
