i've only heard of it since finding this site. i've found some great looking deals on a few particular models but am curious how acer stacks up to the more known companies such as dell, hp, toshiba, etc.

i would say they are as reliable as HP/Dell/Fujitsu/Sony, because I've had experience with them all and none had major issues.

If you don't purposely beat up and damage your laptop, then it's just as reliable as any other brand out there (Dell, HP, Sony, Gateway, Toshiba etc.)

The build quality isn't that great, but thats whats happening to most mainstrem notebooks anyway, as long as you treat it normally an Acer will survive daily life

Acer is fine. Treat it well and look after it and it will last. :)
Throw it around or abuse it and it will break.

Probably true for all notebooks out there unless you get a lemon which manufacturers strive to avoid as it gives them a bad name.... you only normally read about the lemons.... :(

no. have the ferrari 3400, and went wrong 3-4 months in. i used to recommend acer to friends and have started seeing problems with everything. DVD-CD, overheating as in mine, screen hinge broken, does not power up at all ...
so now i am not recommending them.
if you do go, take the extended 2 year warranty.

You know, other notebooks have problems too just like u describe.

So just cuz ur computer has problems, doesn't automatically mean that ALL acers will be the same.

Heck, if u want to buy a certain brand and expect that 100% of their laptops work perfectly, then you will be looking for a very very long time. Every single manufacturer will have laptop with problems.

Go look at the compaq, dell and alienware sections and read some of the horror stories on there if you think that Acer is bad and everything else is 100% perfect.

i dont like the colour i thought it was white but this colour i can describe it. almost it should be ceramic colour. Anyway i think gemstone build is better than any other aspire series.

I think with certain Toshibas, if they break down within a certain period, they refund the full cost of the laptop and give you a new notebook.

with experience from day 1 with my sisters Aspire 3620, i think its a very good laptop. it doesnt exel in anything but its a good durable dependable laptop.

1 complaint is 1 dead pixel and the weak cover... and i also left an indentation on the screen when i accidentally leaned on the top cover. only shows up when anything makes contact with the screen

and one more thing is the N key buckles to the bottom right when i touch the bottom right and stays there... something under the key broke or something... i press the top left and its back to flat position... im incredibly sure its not because of some soda or something.

my wife is still using my old travelmate 230 with the celeron 1.7mhz.
it gets used every day for her bingo and zuma.she keeps it on a cooling pad so no heat issues.the cd-rw works great.
i just surf the net and do loads of paper work not much else on my aspire 7110 (which was a blinding deal new) and find it to big at 17".i still use the wife's laptop aswell she looks after it only reinstalled windows XPhome twice from new.
it will be 4years old this aug.
so it does depend on how you look after the unit. :)

4 years, wow thats a long time. does she move it around everyday? or is it more like desktop use?

and heat issues, forgot about that.... this 3620 hits about 205* if sat on dekstop without cooling pad . with cooling pad, its about 189*... -checked with everest. the bottom of the laptop may get incredibly hot depending on what its processing/placement

Its not the quality that I am mad about it is when the customer service people treat you like a 3 year old who doesn't know anything, that's what gets to me.
