I have this 5940G with a i7 720QM, best PC I ever had. Many i7 based notebooks seems to have heat and cooling problems, but the 5940G is running almost quiet and almost cool.

I look to get a ( one more ) spare PC, a 5750G looks interesting due to the dual graphic card - however - can anybody tell if the i7 2630QM will run more hot than the i7 720QM ? I mean, the 720QM has a base clock of 1,66 and the 2630QM above 2GHz. What is the typicle idel clock of the 2630QM, 2GHz or below ? I suppose the higher base clock will make it run hotter in idel ?

4x1.66GHz in idle contra 4x2.0GHz in idle must have an impact ......

Secondly- any users of this 5750G ? If external VGA is unplugged - and plugged again, will the graphics cards ( both ) remember the setting, or do I have to reconfigure the external monitor all over again, and enable the external monitor - ( as I had to on the trash and crashed computer 5920G  ) ?

    Core I2X = 32nm
    Core IX = 45nm

Both have the same TDP of 45W so max temps should be rather close but as Meaker pointed out i7 2630QM due to its lower manufacturing process will be cooler at idle.

TDP is the same, but the I2 is including a much more powerful GPU.

    what about battery life?

power = temperature (when comparing equal cooling) = battery life

but they claim the new core will have better battery life?

And it will. Due to lower manufacturing process new CPUs will have better battery life.
Besides Meaker was right- TDP is the same but in 720QM that was CPU only (no integrated graphics) while for i7 2630QM it's CPU+ integrated graphics= 45W so the CPU itself is slightly less power-hungry.

The 2630 is going to be significantly faster and draw less power.

The biggest difference between the 2 is the i7 2630QM will have better power mgmt built into it. It will shut devices that drain the power off not needed. I was reading an article where the did a test of the Acer 8943 versus the Acer 8950. They were able to get over 6 hours of battery life with brightness on low and the 8943 is around 3 hours. The i7 2630QM has built in Intel integrated graphics along with discrete card and if the discrete card isn't needed for the task it is shut down and won't draw power.
