Hey guys have another laptop here im having problems with its an acer extensa 5220 with vista. A woman gave this laptop to me for free and the problem is it only works on battery power so i cant start it up cos it wont charge when plugged. The woman had another one of these laptops and put the battery from hers into the one she gave me and it started up. I was hoping it was just a loose connection inside but afraid not. Has anyone any idea what it might be?? I thought maby it could be the little connection where you plug in the charger theres a little wire with a 4pin connector to motherboard could it possibly be that cos if so i can get one off ebay for cheap and replace it

Come on guys some of you must know somethin im really lost here could it possibly just be a matter of changing the little power connection where the charger goes in. Its not even soldered to the board its just connected to the mobo with a 4pin connector. If this could be the fix i could order one from ebay for about 10 euro

The problem is neither you nor the rest of us have any idea what's wrong apart from the problem being connected to power circuit.
There are no variables to eliminate- something is wrong with part of the power circuit a capacitor, connector somewhere etc.
As much as we would like to help you that would be pure speculation- not even an educated guess.
All you can do is play dismantle the laptop, connect the mobo to the PSU and play with multi-meter hoping to find something that doesn’t add up (is not powered although it should be).
The most likely thing would be the power socket failure- as replacing it is not expensive that's where you should start.

Cheers for the reply i was beginning to think i was the only one on this forum. I know what you mean there is too many possible problems but i was hoping that someone else might have had a similar problem and could narrow it down a bit

There's not enough info to narrow it down at this point.
If you have a multimeter, dismantle the laptop and see if the board is even powered and if so what is powered and what's not. That would be a starting point although I can’t Promise it will help.

Ill pick one up tomo is there any place in paticular i should test. Is there any of testing the socket where the charger plugs into laptop with a multimetre cos i really dont want to go to the hassle of ordering and waiting for that part just to discover it was not the problem. Could it be possible that the motherboard would need replacing?

Yes it is possible although not very likely. Since it did start on battery mobo is not fried. You may be forced to use a repair shop though- unless you're good at soldering and you have proper tools.
