    Hi
I'm hoping to get a laptop for school and i don't know whether the acer 5720 is good. Its got all the stuff i need like:
    intel core 2 duo
    2048 mb ram
    160gb hdd
The only major thing I'm wary about is the design and the weight. Its build is a bit bulky and the design is "interesting".
    Can any one help?

Whether or not the 5720 is suitable really depends on your needs. Personally I do not like Acer as most of their laptops share the same keyboard which I find to be of very poor quality. Also I've foudn that many Acer store display models run very hot just while idling.

Anyways, you should ask yourself questions such as "is the extra weight an issue?" and "does the design compromise the functionality?"

    Other questions to ask:

Do you need longer battery life for mobility around campus?

If you are on a budget as most students are, do you find that the 5720 offers superior performance (in terms of speed, mobility, heat output, noise, etc) compared to other notebooks?

I can't answer your question for you as it is your choice; but hopefully the questions I posed for you will help you in deciding. If you want to hear what other NBR members think, the best way to tell them what they need to know is to fill out the FAQ.

I'm not a big fan of Acer machines either. There looks and built quality bother me the most. The model with the 8600GT is a very fast machine though, but it also seems to get quit hot. If you want to use the laptop for many years i would look elsewhere.

Hmmm, i still call that hot.....my FZ's CPU is 30 to 31 Celsius idle and my GPU 49 to 51 degrees.

Well, you should consider the fact that it's T7100 vs. T7300 and 8400GT vs. 8600GT.

Anyway, 5920G is a great laptop.

True for the GPU maybe , but the temperature difference between a T7100 and a T7300 is only 1 degree max. in idle mode. I think it has more to with the different cooling on both machines.

I have one 5720... There are some problems:
    - space bar on the keyboard easily get broken so it works only when pressed in center
    - touchpad electronics reacts even if not directly touched - when typing to keyboard, cursor sometimes goes mad - fixable by one program that turns off touchpad when typing...
    - digital tv tuner has got no drivers for win xp... and it's fairly hard to find the rest of the drivers for XP...
    - couldn't install OS X, no way...
    - that would be all - enough to say it's bad, but everything else is ok.
