The battery, when fully charged, runs for just over an hour. The Acer is about a year and a half old...the most it ever got was two hours on a full charge.
My question is...would a new battery help, or is it a problem of the unit itself?
Where is the best place to find a suitable battery replacement?

The more you use the battery, the more its going to wear itself out. Over time, the wear level will increase, thus you lose capacity.

A new battery will help, but since you only got two hours on a full charge I suggest you reduce power consumption on your notebook. I had this laptop and I got 3 hours and 30 minutes average. Turn off wireless, set power scheme to Max Battery, LCD to minimum, and you may also try undervolting but thats somewhat more advanced.

3 hours 30 minutes is a lot better than a little more than an hour.
I do not use the battery power that often...I usually use it plugged in.
    Would that make a difference?
I cannot disable the wireless...I use that. The other settings are as you suggested.
Would a new battery give me the time that you get?

I'm sure the battery will degrade even if it is plugged in, just alot slower compared to continuous use.

A new battery will most definitely give you the time, but check to make sure you get the 4400 mAhr one, I don't know if it is 6-cell or 8-cell but since you have the Aspire 5000 you most likely don't have the smaller 4-cell which comes with the Aspire 3000. Just get the highest-capacity battery you can find.

Any suggestions on where to find one of the batteries you mention above?

I have an Aspire 5000 with six cell battery. Its basically new, and I'm lucky if I get anywhere close to two hours. Acer sells an eight cell for $150. Don't have a lot of faith it will help by much. Also, changing power settings makes no difference I've found, as have others if you check other posts on the subject.

I agree about the power settings. WHen I first got it, I came close to t 2 1/2 hours, but that didn't last very long. I would think a newer and more powerful (?) battery would improve it. I envy those who say they get 3+ hours.

Maybe your battery already had some wear when you first bought it. When I first bought my Aspire 5000 I had 0% battery wear so I got the full 3.5 hours, maybe even a bit more.

I never got more than slightly over two hours, and not for very long. It quickly diminished to what it is now, a little over an hour. I called Acer support, and got what appeared to be a generic answer..."it depedns on a lot of factors....yadda yadda" with the bottom line being thank you for calling goodbye.
I found a 4800 Mah battery at Battery Universe. I think I will try that and see if it brings me up to at least two hours.

Someone else said the same in another thread, but it turned out he had the eight cell battery. Most have a six cell.

Well, I got a replacement battery and it is 4800. But the odd thing is, if I let it get down to under 20%, when I go to recharge, it will only go up to 95-95% and stay there. If I then unplug it, run the battery for a minute or two, then plug it back in, it will fully charge. It will also fully charge if I start charging it when it is OVER 20%. Odd.
