I would like to install Windows XP on the second hard drive of my 6930G.
And I was wondering I could use a XP OEM disc that I got from HP about 5 years ago for an NC 8000 notebook? Also do all those OEM XP discs on eBay work with any compuer? Or do I need a speciific brand of computer?

I would think the XP you've got it should work. You can try it anyway. In the event that you have some problems and your XP are not recognised as legit you can call Microsoft and sort out the problem with them. I think the XP might be registered with the previous laptop so somehow Microsoft has to delete that registration so you can register the XP with the new laptop. The only problems you are going to have are drivers-wise. Unfortunately, Acer don't provide any drivers for the 6930G in XP. So before starting, gather as many drivers as you can for all your devices and then proceed with the installation.

Oh snap! I never realized there were no XP drivers! I wonder if the Vista ones are backwards compatrible. I remember with my HP DV5000 the drivers for the Card Reader stopped being supported on XP, but when you look up the Vista drivers on the same site they still worked.

I know that I don't need the video drivers from Acer as they are old and the latest Nvidia drivers work better with games. The only difference I noticed is that they are'nt controlable with Acer ePower Managment. Big Deal!

The etherner drivers I could'nt possibly imagine would matter whether they were from Acer or RealTek.

The touchpad should work with a generic XP driver.

Now the Audio drivers....I know will give me some trouble because only the Acer version have the Tuba cine Bass support.

Come on someone had to have installed XP on the 6930G before.

Any OEM disk that is "branded" will not work for what you are looking to do. You need an un-modified version of windows xp to do what you want.

And you'll need to also get a valid copy of windows xp to do what you are wanting (so buy the license and you'll get the right media)

Well actually you just need the media, right? He can use the license key from the HP disk. I know people they have used other people disks to install, for instance, Windows 64-bit and they used the license key they had from their laptops that happened to be for 32-bit OS. So I can't see why he can't use a disk with just XP (borrow it from a friend) and then use the license key from the HP laptop.

The license for XP OEM is tied to the motherboard and therefore would be a violation of copyright and end user agreements with Microsoft. So no, he can't do that.

So no, sorry you can't do that legally. Purchase the software or this thread will be locked

Really? Wow, I didn't know that. That sounds a bit unfair to be honest. But perhaps laptops with Windows OS would have cost more otherwise.

Yea sorry... all M$ licenses are tied to the physical hardware. You can't transfer the licenses @ all sorry.

Read the EULA (end user license agreement)

The HP XP SP1a oem disc will install on any comuter without prompt for a key, but Windows still asked for Activation. Once you get around THAT. You can still pass the Windows Genuine Advantage and upgrade all the way to SP3.
I understand that with Windows 7, MS will make an option to license 3 computers..is that true?
