Why is Acer's BIOS so limited? Particularly on the higher-end notebooks. All I can do is a password lock and boot up on the 8940G. No overclocking or anything else.

What can be done about this, has anyone tried contacting them about it?

In my view, they want to keep things simple, and restrict their models to their basic designed reference specifications.

To my knowledge, Acer has never really produced a ' high-end' laptop per-se, keeping their focus primarily on solid quality builds, in the moderately priced, volume sales market. High-end notebooks are somewhat a niche market. Avoiding 'high-end', also means avoiding all the high-end service and support cost that goes along with it. I would not expect their strategy to change much, and this has served them well:

Acer ranks second in the preliminary total worldwide PC market ranking

    latest market share rankings

As an example, if the Acer 8942G actually ships with ATI's 5850 card (intially published as the 5650 card), this would be the most aggressive move from Acer I've seen. Even such, the ATI 5850 will not be the high-end of this series, and the 8942G will only ship with the 'low-end' Core i7 720QM..... again still basic and low cost, yet 'leading edge' technologies nonetheless.

    :)
