Please can anyone advise on using a 37 inch high def tv as an external monitor. The TV is a Toshiba and the laptop is an Acer Aspire 5630. I have a cable to connect the two but when I tried, the tv screen just blinked but with no image. The TV manual is not that clear (or I may be being stupid!).Any advice is wellcome.

are you using the s-video or do you have HDMI ?

i use the s-video and set the display properties to dual and the input on the TV to ext3 s-video.
the sound is done optical SPDIF from the headphone jack which has daul outputs analog/optical

EDIT:you have the same graphics as me and will have the same software.

so open display properties, settings,Advanced, then open the Intel(R)graphics media tab
open the graphics properties button. if you have the TV connected you will see all the options.
it takes a time to set the display on the tv right but its great with games with the optical plugged in
    to the cinema system. ;)
