Ive been reading the threads here on NBR, and i think the answers to all my problems lie in a BIOS upgrade.

Im using windows XP and have BIOS version 1.27

I went to acers website http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5315.html to downlaod the bios but there is nothing in the windows xp section, all bios versions are in the vista section.

    what now?

can i use the vista bios? also what is the winflasher, is it safe? are there any safer alternatives to it?

    thx

Yeah, you can use the Vista version. This was tested many times in the past so I can assure you that the Vista BIOS updates for AS5315 work under XP.

What guide, all you need to do is download the archive(v1.43.zip), extract the files then extract the exe file from ICL50143_winflash.zip - ICL50143A.exe - and run it. Make sure your system is stable and you turn off ALL programs you may have running in the background. If something goes wrong and the update process is interrupted no matter how, you'll end up with a dead laptop.

In my opinion it's very important the you know how your system behavior. For example, if your system experience crashes/hangs for unknown reason and in a random times I will NOT update my BIOS because there is a chance my system to hang during the update process.
If your system is stable though I recommend doing the following:
    1. Have the file extracted and prepared on your desktop.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. After the restart turn off ALL the programs that are running in the background - antivirus, firewall, antispam, antimalware, sidebar, winamp etc. All of them!
    4. Run the ICL143A.exe, cross your fingers and run the update. In 30sec-1min range the update should be done and it will automatically restart/shutdown your computer.

Remember, you're doing this at your own risk I cannot be held responsible if something goes wrong!

Edit: Glad you updated without problem, I had some work to do so my "explaining post" came late.. :)
