Hi, I'm new to this forum. I just signed recently after searching for forums dedicated to Laptops on google. I have an old Acer Travelmate Laptop that I wanted to upgrade. (I'm using it right now). It's still working great, however, I'm having problems with RAM. It only has 512mb RAM pre-installed and 1.70GHZ Intel Pentium M Processor when I bought it. Now here's my question, can I upgrade my RAM memory to 1GB or 2GB? How much would it cost? Can I replace it myself or should I hire a tech support to have it installed?

I'm satisfied with my processor's speed right now but I'm also wondering if this is also upgradeable? At least change it to 2.0GHZ. What do you guys think? I don't want to buy a new laptop since I'm comfortable using this one. It's our computer at home and the big screen is not a problem at all.

Any suggestions to make this old laptop working smoother and faster? Many thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forums.
RAM upgrade is very easy and will improve the general responsiveness a lot.
Another thing you can do is to buy a new HDD- that will not only give you more storage nut also improve performance.
Old ATA 5400rpm HDD drives had an average-read figure of some 30MB/s while new ones have ~50MB/s
Mind you have to buy DDR RAM 333MHz (nor DDR2 or DDR3) and an ATA hard drive (not an SATA)
Here's an Acer service guide with all parts and detailed instructions, lists of CPUs and so on- you'll find it useful.

    -----------
Mod note: Links to service guides are not allowed due to copyright issues however this one is hosted at Acer PanAm support website which makes it OK in my book.

Ok, I'm going to upgrade my RAM first because my laptop slows down sometimes due to not enough RAM. Then, my keyboard. I spilled coke over the keys once. My letter "Q" and no "3" doesn't work anymore.

I won't be able to buy a new HDD with my money tho. But I'll put it to my to-buy list!

    Thanks for your help, downloads.
