Has anyone experimented with Ubuntu or any other distribution of Linux on a 6920G?

I'm thinking of dual-booting it with Vista Ultimate 64.

I tested Ubuntu on AS6920G using Ubuntu Live CD.
I don't think Ubuntu is very nice to use if you're not doing networking stuffs.
I only use my Ubuntu Live CD to boot the laptop when my HDD got screwed up(which is unable to access or error on Windows OSes).

I tinkered around with Ubuntu a little bit - Linux systems don't support the 6920G's Realtek sound chip out of the box (there's a fix somewhere online).

Linux sucks for anything but servers. You heard it here first. I SAID IT. :D

    Just to follow-up this thread.

Tried it, hated it, wiped it.

Linux is like the old Workbench OS on my Amiga A500+ 15 years ago!

I don't care how "uncool" it is, Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP2 is light-years ahead of Ubuntu 9.10 in every possible way!

Haha, my friend, what you get from a default installation CD is just the basics. To get the real eye candy (or whatever you were looking for) you have to fiddle around with it.
To really appreciate Linux try it as your default system for at least 2 weeks. By that time you should figure out all the quirks on your system and complete the preparations for the ultimate Linux experience :D

As mentioned, Linux/Ubuntu OSes are not for normal or ordinary people usage.
So, it is useless or pointless to use Linux OSes if you're doing something like gaming, rendering, modeling, type-ing, reading, drawing and so on.
Linux OSes are for networking servers stuffs.
Moreover, the supports for Linux OSes are very less. You will find yourself a lot of troubles with drivers and application/softwares.

I didn't mean Ubuntu can't do the stuffs I mentioned.
Just how many games or softwares fully support Linux OSes? It is a lot fewer compared to Windows OSes.

I could see the point of Linux when Micro$oft were churning out such rubbish as Windows ME or XP pre-SP3, but I honestly think Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP2 is fantastic.

I did for some time, now i'm using Linux mint. There's some issue with the sound that can be solved, sd card needs to be inserted at boot to be able to read it, fingerprint readers does not work and I can't say for sure, but you may have brightness problem with the lattest kernels

Well, well. That's going to be complicated to do all the fixes.

    Off topic:
By the way, I saw your signature. Your 3DMark06 score are lower than usual.
With the clocks you set you'll probably get about 48XX-49XX points instead of 45XX only. I think you need newer Forceware like 186.82 or 186.42 or 186.81. These are the BEST currently.
My OC 9500M GS(check my signature) give me 4815 points in 3DMark06.

I'm using the 186.81 drivers off the NVidia website. I don't know where that ~800 points has gone

According to the Futremark ORB, I have the fastest 9500M GS based system when it comes to PCMark05 and 3DMark03, but 3Dmark06 is lagging behind a bit :(

Did you OC your 9500M GS?
If you didn't, you will probably get about 3800-4000 points for 3DMark06 only.
Check my signature to see how many percent I OCed. Then, you will know it better.

My 9500M GS is overclocked by quite a bit. Got it running at 635/480/1450!

    http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/fn6dr/

Still only getting 4044 in 3DMark06 and 13280 in 3DMark03 though.

Could it be driver related or the fact that I'm on Vista Ultimate 64-bit?

It is definitely Driver related I guess. Because you have very high OCed 9500M GS(higher than mine). But, you get such a LOW points.
Well, I would suggest 186.82 Driver. I guess you know how to completely remove(safe mode with CCleaner and Driver Sweeper) the previous Driver before installing the new Driver right?
Here is the download link for the almightly 186.82 Driver, http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/24999-v18682-windows-7vista-64bit-nvidia/

Please do tell the result of the 3DMark06 after using 186.82. I guess it will be better(probably 800-1000points extra).
Just in case, download the latest DirectX update here, http://www.filehippo.com/download_directx/
With the latest DirectX, your laptop performance will increase harshly.

I cleaned out the 186.81 driver in safe mode as you're supposed to, then installed 186.82 and the modded INF, then overclocked to 625/475/1400 and ran 3dMark06 and got 3996 point... worse than with the 186.81's.

This must be an OS/Software issue. Maybe Windows 7 64-bit is quicker than Vista 64-bit in 3dMark06? Maybe I have too many processes running in the background (91) while I'm benchmarking.

According to the Futuremark Online Results Browser, my system is the fastest 9500M GS based system in 3dMark03 by a considerable margin, so I must be doing something right.

I got the same 3DMark06 points for both Vista and 7 x64.
    It is not OS related.
3DMark05 or lower are not good for benchmarking anymore and is not recommended now a day.
3DMark06 is not very good either but it is much more better than all the previous versions.
    Maybe you should try 3DMark Vantage(newer than 3DMark06), http://www.filehippo.com/download_3dmark_vantage/

Hmm, I wonder what can be causing it then.

To be honest, I'm not really that concerned about synthetic benchmarks. Apart from Crysis: Warhead, the most modern game I play is UT2004, which runs brilliantly at full/high settings for everything.

I'm getting a 500Gb HDD "soon" so when I reinstall everything, I'll benchmark it on a fresh install and see if it is OS/Software related.

Darksilver, I don't know whats wrong with my laptop. Im using 6920g, almost same specs with you. For some reason, my 3dmark03 results quite low than average. After overclock, I just manage to get 5600, which is very low compare to average 10000..

Ive done the undervolt, remove the powermizer, using nvidia driver 186.82 and I still get low results. Hope you can help me out.
