All I want to do is have my screen turn off when I close the lid of my acer Aspire 9500. I don't want standby or hibernation, just the screen to go off and come back when I open the lid. I have spent ages trying to find the answer.

In the Power Options control panel, set the screen to turn off in a relatively short period of time when plugged in (5 mins?). Set the disks to never turn off, and to never enter standby.

On the Advanced tab, select "Do nothing" under When I close the lid of my portable computer.

This effectively makes the screen turn off after about 5 minutes of you doing nothing (like closing the lid and walking away).
