I just listened to the audio file you provided. If this is happening while the system is idle, it's a good possibility that the drive is about to fail. That clicking noise was pretty loud and loud clicking indicates imminent failure. There are the standard clicking noises that may come from HDD's while idle, but with that amount of clicks in a 9sec span makes me think it's going bad. Backup all your data and contact Acer for a drive replacement. Better safe than sorry.

Hmmm, if this happens only when writing to, then it might be OK. Since the head needs to move around when writing, you may get clicking. Since it's quite when idling, it's probably OK. I'd probably contact Acer anyways just to be sure. If they send the drive out to you, it'll probably take about a week, but the drive gets to you first so you don't have to lose your system access during the wait time. You might have to request an Advanced Replacement for them to ship the drive to you first.

I have a TM4001LMi with the exact same noise (1 week old). Acer advised me, I should restore my computer using the recovery disk. Will this make a difference?[?]

    destfix,

Sorry, I have not yet spoken to Acer and will post the outcome here as soon as I do.
Please post the resolution, if the clicking problem is resolved.

    Thanx

Just listened to all the audio files, boy was a get the crap scared out of me [ :D]. Nothing but silence, I crank my volume to max and then all of a sudden CLICK CLICK CLICK!!!!![:0]

Regarding the noise that I've heard, it doesn't sound like anything is wrong. Since it just mainly makes this noise when writing/reading and the occasional time when it idle, there's nothing wrong. It just sounds like the drive is re-calibrating. This does happen occasionally even if the drive is sitting idle. I don't think there's anything wrong.

The drives everyone seems to be listing is the Hitachi/IBM drives. It's possible it's just the design of the drive itself. My old IBM drives would CLICK (loud) once in a while, but it's fine. Been doing that for the past few years without any problems. Now, if the drives would click like this on a constant rate over and over again, THEN the drive is screwed and needs replacement. You can still get it replaced, but try asking for a different brand drive. Try asking for a Seagate (another brand they seem to use). I have a Seagate Mometus 5400RPM drive myself and it's very quite. I too get the occasional noise, but it's doing the calibration or possibly being polled by the system.

I really dont know what to do... [)] This is my first laptop so i dont know anything about this noise what ive never heard on my desktop pc.
This HDD is works fine but must be something wrong with it.
Imagine that when i copy data is almost more silence than when im surfing on the web or reading news etc... and its impossible to talk on the messenger or record when i play on my guitar. [8D] , if i could change the tempo of the clicking then ok for a built-in metronome. [ :D]

Can i get it replaced for these reasons? It is covered by the warranty?

Acer requested that the laptop be sent back which was arranged this morning. I will give an update as soon as the laptop is returned.(2weeks)

Thank you for all the advice.

    Destfix,
You may not be able to hear the sound from a desktop drive because of the size, more sound dampening material. Also, the computer makes more noise than a notebook, so that will drown out the same noise. You can still get it fixed, just tell Acer that you're getting a clicking noise when idle. There shouldn't be any issues getting it replaced. You may have to send it in like Trompie82.

    Trompie82,
Hope everything works outs for you. Did you ask if they could maybe put a different brand of drive into the unit (could be a Hitachi issue)?
