I've been trying to change the sensitivity settings for my touchpad on my Acer Aspire 5610z using the Synaptics configuration utility.
When I goto the Device Settings Tab and click on the settings button i get this error: Windows host process (rundll32) has stopped working.
The Synaptics window whites out and when I click the close button it closes but the application stays in my bottom right taskbar and I can open it again.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program and it isn't helping.
I tried the generic vista driver on the synaptics site. Is there somewhere else I can adjust these settings? I'm really tired of clicking on things on accident because the tap setting is so sensitive. My girlfriends inspiron 1100 is five years old and her program works fine. Is this driver program not working because the version is designed for xp? Do I need to give the program administrative rights?
Any input would be greatly appreciated as I've already had to redo a couple of documents because it clicked on save instead of save as...

Reinstall doesn't solve the problem probably because the uninstall process leaves leftovers - files and regkeys. If uou know how to you may try to uninstall, clean the registry, delete any leftover files. Then install Synaptics driver. You have to be sure what are you doing or else you can mess up your registry.
Or you may try ALPS touchpad driver for Vista. Although if there is a problem in your registry ALPS may give you the same or similar error.

Apparently, ACER by some reason doesn't provide the ALPS touchpad driver for Aspire 5610(or at least I was unable to find one on http://support.acer-euro.com/), but you can download if for another ACER model. It should work just fine.

Edit: If you use Vista's default driver for touchpad(which means no additional drivers like Synaptics or ALPS are installed) you can easily reduce the sensitivity(movement) from Control Panel->Mouse Settings. The default driver doesn't have the option for avoiding accidental typing(tap sensitivity....right?) though so...

Uninstalled the program and ran a registry cleaner. Checked the registry afterward for instances of Synaptics and it was clean.
Now when I click the settings tab it doesn't give me an error but instead does nothing. Is there a link problem with the software you think? this is an old version of the program/driver software and I'm really getting the feeling its not made for vista.

Nawp, the program makes my pointer sensitivity too low and the configuration utility doesn't open at startup. I can't find where it installed on my computer to open the utility. Is there no generic driver with sidescroll functionality? I could care less about the middle button on my touchpad seeing as its just an extra scrollbar, but I'm too used to the sidescroll on the pad to go without it.

Don't know what to tell you. Can't think of anything else.

By the way I think it's possible to change the settings of the Synaptics directly from the registry. Check out that screenshot:

You can modify it all, horizontal/vertical scrolling tap settings...

9.0.13 for vista. Oh man this brings the functionality of the pad up so much. There are hotzones to maximize/minimize your selected menu or any other number of other functions (forward or back browser button). Awesomerific and it works. Rockin dokken.

Its a driver package from dell r141200.exe Synaptics driver version 9.0.1.3, A00.
Works like a charm where the latest version for vista from the Synaptics site didn't.
    http://support.us.dell.com/support/...eid=R141200&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=188272

I ended up searching for one of the hardware id's listed in my drier details and stumbled on this driver after trying about 2-3 others. I think my problem is that my Touchpad is a ps/2 port touchpad... Though I'm probably wrong, the version 10 driver on Synaptics website wouldn't install the mouse driver.
