I recently bought an Aspire 1683WLMi and I wan to connec it to my TV through the S-video, but sadly my TV doesnot have an S-Video In, so I got a SVideo to Composite cable. But unfortunately I get black and white when I try to connect. My lappy has a 7 pin SVideo and Im conencting a 4pin SVideo to Composite cable. The guy at the store I bought it from said that if i connect a 4 pin to a 7 pin SVideo then I will get Black and White, but I doubt thats the case. I tried different setting options i knew like changing the TV settings on the display properties from NTSC to PAL B format, which is the standard for my country. Also tried changing the resolution to 800 x 600 but no luck. Does anyone have the same problem? Can someone please shed osme light on this please. I really want to connect mappy to my TV. Thanks in advance.

I hate to say this but if your TV doesn't support s-video then it's probably not a good idea to connect any kind of adapters or special cables from your laptop to your tv, and it could be the reason why you are only getting b&w.

Find a TV that supports s-video and try it with just the proper cable, if you get the right picture with colour and everything then the adapters and composite cable you used to try to hook up your tv doesn't work with the s-video port on your laptop.

Now that you got a new laptop you might have to shop for a new tv. [ :p]

Well you might be right, but I was just wondering since you get these cables and adapters on the market and I ve heard and read on the net about ppl succesfully doing this. But unfortunately I m just getting b&w, so was just curious why it was nt working with me properly and if there are any tweaks or somehitng, mayybe ppl who have tried and been succcesful could help just jelp. But I guess, no ones willing to share anything out here, thats sad too! [ :(]

I have also been trying to connect my HP laptop to the TV. Everything I tried did not work even though I used multiple versions of composite cables, S-Video adapters, and TVs. However, I then tried an Phillips RF Modulator from Walmart ($17.00) plus a S-Video cable and it worked perfectly. It said it would work with laptops. I also used the same cable and adapter used to get RCA(composite) and connected it to the RF Modulator and it also worked. The only drawback is that it creates a cable type signal to connect rather than a composite output from the RF Modulator. This is not a great draw back. I have also been told that the S-Video adapters do not work(although the one did work with RF Modulator). It was suggested that I get a $20.00 adapter from Radio Shack. I haven't done this yet but I think that it is going to work. I have found several sites on the internet that suggest that a capacitor is also needed and these cables don't have that. AVI also sells one but the shipping cost is large. I am still trying to find a more reasonable solution and to understand why it worked when it did but if the 20.00 cost of the adapter or the RF Modulator feels reasonable, I think that they will probably solve your problem.

Have any of you guys tried running it through your VCR to see if you get any color with the S-Video to Composite adapters plugged in one of its inputs? (just a thought)

Hey EvNash Thanks for your insight.... But to state clearly, are you saying that you connected your s-video cable to the RF modulator from the notbook and then conected the Composite video cable from the RF modulator to the tv and it worked? Or could you like explain the scenario again, if you could lik post a picture or two of the modulator you are tlaking about it would really help. There are many ppl out here who I know have the same probelm and would really appreciate and cherish your solution since you have tried it first hand... Thanks

What I did to connect to the RF Modulator(PH61159) was first to simply connect the laptop to the input of the modulator using an S-Video cable. The modulator has an S-Video input. The output of the RF Modulator was connected to the TV using a standard cable TV cable(The ones that have a thin wire sticking out and screw on or push onto the TV and are typically used by Cable TV providers). They can be bought or made. That connection worked. Then, separate from that, I connected to the RF Modulator using an RCA cable and A S-Video adapter(dongle type - just a short cable wire with a connector for S-Video on one end and a RCA(composite) on the other). I connected the dongle to the S-Video out on the computer and then connected a standard composite cable(they may have yellow colored connectors) to the dongle and connected the other end into the RF Modulator. The RF Modulator also had a RCA composite input. This also worked. Note that the S-Video was not connected at all for the second test. Thus a laptop with either a yellow RCA(composite) TV output or a yellow S-Video output could connect using the RF modulator. Normally the RCA would be used with a computer that has an RCA output for the TV and therefore no S-Video adapter is required. I did not have a computer with RCA output that I could test. The Phillips RF Modulator is model #61159. I went to www.walmart.com and searched for Phillips RF Modulator and it showed two similar devices with slightly different model numbers and were priced and $20 and $25. I would go to a store and look at the choices.
