    Hi folks,

When i got my laptop i noticed there were no recovery discs or an operating system disc. I assume Vista is pre built into the hard drive. What i need to do now tho is reformat the whole computer because its runnin pretty slowly (mainly on startup) and i want to clean out the computer especially all the stuff that was preloaded onto the computer when i got it.

Problem is i havent a clue how to do it. On old computers i would use the operating system cd to re-do the computer or recover discs supplied.

What do i need to do please?

    thanks

first of all use the Empowering Technology icon at the to right of screen to create your quick-restore CD/DVDs. DO THAT BEFOR$E REFORMATTING... if you have already done that then you can proceed to reload from those disks or even better downgrade to windows XP if you can locate all the required drivers... search this site for "acer 5920 windows XP drivers" also search google and check acer's site. but you only need to worry about drivers if you going to downgrade the OS to XP.

if you are going that route check out this link for some real good info and the drivers there may work for you too..

    good luck

Thanks for that. Which of the Acer applications should be kept on the system? I dont want too much unnecessary software on my computer so i actually deleted most of it.

I would try downgrading to xp but then ill totally lose vista and i dont have a vista disc for the future if i want to get it back. Might get my mate to come round and sort me out cos this sorta thing is his job. Ive never been too hot at sorting out computers

Why not first go to Acer,s web site and burn all of the drivers and programs that comes with your laptop to a DVD. They will be the lastest drivers and updates to the programs you have installed on your laptop.
Then make a backup of Acer's recovery disks to a DVD.
Instead of formatting the hard drive, simply go the add/remove and remove all of the Acer bloatware you don.t need. If you happen to remove one of them you want, you can simply reinstall them with no problem.
Be very sure do burn the DVD recovery disks before you proceed with anything else.
I have tried it both ways using a capture COA program and reformatting and I see no advantage to doing a fresh install.

the only Acer installed app that is REALLY required is the LAUNCH MANAGER, it controls all the Buttons (vol+,-; wifi, bluetooth, E button). Other than that i've seen no need for any of the Empowering technology apps unless you downgrade to windows XP.

if you downgrade to XP some Acers have trouble restarting the cooling fan after resuming from sleep or hibernate unless you install the Empowering Tech Framework and the EPower managment. And i've even found an app that gets around that. by using the app at this link you can get around the need for any of the Empowering Tech programs.

    hope this answered your question

hi yes thanks for the repies. i have sucessfully refreshed my laptop now. Only problem at the minute is it cant go to sleep!! When i ask it to sleep it goes through the motions and shuts the screen off etc, but it tries reading the dvd drive (which it never used to do) and hangs up mid shutdown. ANyone had this problem or know how to get around it?

Basically wont go to sleep because of some error as it attempts to read the dvd drive then hangs up.

there are XP versions of Empowering Tech apps for those models that shipped w/ XP... you might do some research or find one that works for you through trial and error,,, as far as the HD-dvd goes, that's not something i am familuar with... you may get more replys if you start your own NEW thread addressing that issue.

    good luck,
