I purchased my laptop a couple of years ago and for 6 months or so it worked fine, however I had to reinstall windows. Whichever method I used to re install windows ie: the inbuilt restore option, the restore disks or installing using a new windows XP disk, the laptop switched itself of during the istallation process.

I returned the laptop th Acer as it was still under warrenty and the laptop was returned as new with windows XP installed. However 6 months ago I made the rather foolish mistake of installing Windows Vista, I have now realised the laptop can't handle Vista & I want to re install windows XP and guess what when I try to reinstall windows XP using the restore disks or a copy of windows XP (the inbuilt restore option no longer works) the laptop turns itself of halfway through instllation again.

I have contacted Acer & they are unable to help as the laptop is no longer under warranty.

Apart from the problem with the laptop switching itself of while trying to install windows it work fine all be it slowly with Vista, all the air vents are clear & it doesn't appear to be overheating.

Any help & assistance will be much appreciated.

Thanks for the response, I don't get any sort of message during the installation the progress bar gets to around halfway and then the laptop just shuts down.

Both sections of the drive, shown as drive C: & D: are ntfs formatted.

If I had that problem, I believe I'd just wipe the drive before attempting the install of XP. KillDisk or DBan each works well. If you decide to try either of these apps, read all the instructions, advice and warnings before use.

I had this problem long time ago with another laptop..the problem was CPU overheat..Check the heatsinks and fan(make sure it's clean and spinning)...reseat the RAM...I'd reseat the CPU and the heatsink too..

Test the RAM too..If you want to do it try Memtest86+
