I am a new Acer3004WLCI laptop owner and I want to upgrade my 512MB RAM to 2 gigs eventually. Is it ok if I buy a 1gig stick first and continue using one of the 256MB ones or is that going to affect the performance when I play video games. I also need advice on what brand to go with and any other advice that may be useful is welcomed.

you don't have to have matching sticks, so having 1 gig plus the 256 mb shouldn't be a problem. as for brand, i would recommend corsair, kingston, crucial, or transcend. you can also go to newegg.com and see which ram has a lot of positive reviews.

Ok, this one has good reviews and it's a good price.

    pqi POWER 1GB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Notebook Memory ($90.75).

Also, there's this, for a more expensive price but it also has rave reviews; Crucial Technology 1GB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Notebook Memory ($129.99)

And this one also has great reviews

    Transcend 1GB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Notebook Memory ($99.99)

At this point I think it's gonna come down to price. I think I'm gonna go with the PQI (BTW they all come with lifetime warranties, isn't that something???)
