I have an Acer Aspire 3023 and recently upgraded to windows vista.

The first time I put windows into sleep everything goes smoothly, it goes to sleep and wakes up to the desktop. But if i try again say 5 minutes later, the lcd just turns off and the hard drives are still running. Theres no way I can bring the screen back on and I have to use the emergency shut down.

Has anyone experienced this problem or could give me any info? Thanks in advance.

I think the problem is specific to Acer, my desktop pc (non-acer) which is also running vista has no problems at all with the sleep function.
I never had a problem with the standy on Windows XP.

If I understand correctly, Aspire 3023 is part of the Aspire 3000 series which is similar to the Aspire 5000 series. I have had the exact same problem as you, and the ACPI is the culprit, which deals with the power management of the laptop. It seems Vista is incompatible with this series of laptop.

I have gotten around the problem by disabling the sleep function and rarely using hibernate. Apparently this is the only a temporary solution. I sent an email to Acer Technical Support a few days ago about this problem and whether or not they will have an updated BIOS or drivers to fix these issues.

I suggest you don't use standby or hibernate and to also disable the LCD automatically shutting down after a set amount of time option. Those are what made my laptop difficult to use. When I get a response from Acer I will post back in this thread, so just keep waiting. I will probably get a response within a week or two depending on how fast I can get a response

However, since the 3000/5000 series is not listed on Acer's Express Upgrade to Vista page then I think it is unlikely they will provide support for Vista, but just wait and see what Acer says.

ok i had a feeling it had something to do with the bios, i haven't really been using the sleep and hibernate since i installed vista but it would be pointless running vista like that forever. hopefully you get a positive response and acer do release an updated bios or driver to sort this problem out. the acer 3000/5000 series meet the requirements for running vista so they should in theory provide support for them.
im thinking of running windows xp on dual-boot in the mean time.

Alright I got a reply from Acer, but you are not going to like it.

    and just a note:

As of Friday, February 23, 2007 at 4:30 PM EST I have officially lost all respect for Acer. *insert profanity here*.

Here is the message I sent them:

^seems like they can't be bothered to test vista on that series of aspire, these laptops meet the requirements to run vista, what kind of qualification do they need? and an OEM and a retail version is exactly the same except a few drivers, i'm going to phone them up tomorrow and see what they say
