You wouldn't happen to be running your programs in 256-bit color compatibility mode, would you?

Hi guys , I have just found this forum and need some help . I have an Acer aspire 1642 WMLi my granson decided to try and put Vista on it for me whle I was away and needless to say it screwed up the Alt F10 eRecovery facility and most of everything else.
I have no recovery discs with the laptop and Acer want £60 for set of discs ""outrageous"".
    So
I have installed my desktop "XP pro" onto the HD and downloaded all drivers I could find from Acer and all is fine BUT when I try to install the acer "eRecovery" program so I can the re-linstall from the hidden partion via Alt F10 it says "this is not a D2D system. I have enabled D2D in the bios so any ideas as to the cause. Is it because I have loaded XP Pro not XP home ??????

    Many thanks in anticipation
    Pier

This is because the hard drive is now missing the Hidden partition which contains all the files for the Alt F10 recovery as it would have been wiped during the Vista installation. Without this partition and the files that are kept on their, the e-recovery program will not run. Sorry I can't be more help.

This is the start of a graphics card fault I'm afraid. Its always odd that it started by one program. I've seen quite a few of these models doing this and they have all required mainboard replacements. Sorry I can't be more help

    Dear PenrynTech
Thanks for the reply, this was the first thing I thought of but on checking my HD I found a "PQservice 3.15Gb Fat 32 Primary" peartition followed by
2 x 38Gb HD's "C" & "D" respectively. As the whole HD is 80Gb my assumption is that the 3.15Gb primary holds the original programs. My problem if all is well with this is accesing it via alt F10.

    Any thoughts on this

    Pier

try seeing if the recovery partion is still active in disk managment.

    control panel>administrative tools> computer management>expand storage>disk management.

this should show if the acerdata partion is still active and healthy.

then we need to work out how or what accesses the partion in alt+F10.
have you tried Alt+F10 when windows is running ?
or just at the splash screen.

    Hoggie

    1. As advised above Disc management shows hidden Acer data partition as:-

    PQService/Partition/Basic/Fat32/Healthy(Eisa Cong)/2.93Gb/80Gb/20%/0%

    2. Doing Alt+10 in splash screen gets a blank screen with curser in top left for 2 secs then a normal windows bootup, doing Alt+F10 at any other time has no effect.

    Hi,

I have just formatted my hard disk and reinstalled windows XP Pro. However, I do not have the recovery cd and my sound card no longer works. I have downloaded the driver available onthe acer web site, but I have problems toinstall it. Can anyone send me a web link where I could download the driver for my Aspire 1640's sound card, or help me to install the driver?

    Thx!
