My 5920G's GPU died about 2 years ago (8600M GS) and now I want to replace it so I can use my laptop again.

I'd like to buy a compatible GPU from E-bay. I don't need an upgrade, just a GPU that will perform about the same with the 8600M GS (if it's a bit worse it doesn't matter). I just want to browse the Internet and check out photos and videos, I now game on my new desktop. Any suggestions?

I don't know if the 9600m gt is able to function with a bios mod, but that would be the best card you could get for the machine (IMHO). Otherwise you could check the mxm upgrade thread and see what upgrades have been attempted and weather or not they will work.

Either way you will be paying close to $200 to buy a new card (unless you get extremely lucky on ebay), so if its worth it to you to pay a bit more, just go for an upgrade.

As I said I don't need an upgrade, it doesn't matter if the GPU is a bit worse than the previous one. I won't be doing any GPU-demanding tasks on that laptop, I'm doing all that on my new desktop.

I'll check that thread. Thank you for the advice!

well, in that case you might check out this listing on ebay

that *SHOULD* do the trick! :D

I'm just surprised they are going for under $180

*edit* Just be sure to slap some ic diamond on there when you install it!

Is it safe to buy a GPU almost identical to my old one? Isn't it affected from the same problem and might die again?

Check out the MXM BIOS thread. 9600M GT + 5920G is long solved.

It is, so save yourself a(nother) headache, buy an ATi - HD3470, HD3650 - whichever you found cheaper. All you'll need is different set of drivers.
