What does it say when you right click on the drive and hit properties in Windows Windows Explorer?

Well sometimes the manufacturer does it but usually its out of request from the customer. The partition is is just there for for you to sort your files a little more specifically.

Acer always have had 2 partitions on their systems. Mostly I think it is unecessary, but I guess it helps to store your installed programs in different partition instead of the same partition as Windows. There is no practical performance advantage to it but more of an organization thing.

LOL. There is significant performance advantage if your disk is less fragmented or if you set up swap file partition. It's really easier to reinstall the system if all your data is on different partition.

Well, you can have fragmented files even when a HDD is partitioned, so thats a moot point. There might be little improvements but nothing that can be termed significant.

Having the swap file on a different partition on the same hard disk will decrease the performance as windows has to perform disk reading and writing requests on both the system folder and the paging file. It will have to search through the HDD each time it needs to access the page files. But it is advantageous to have the page file on a different partition on a different hard drive. In a laptop this is also not possible unless you have 2 HDD's. So, there wont be any real improvements for the average user with a partition.

But I do agree on the fact that having 2 partitions willhelp in organising files beter on the HDD and easier to create backups of important files.

Having the swap file on different partition prevents fragmenting of this file and Windows will search for a page file anyway, so keeping it in one piece will improve access speed. Keeping your data on different partition it will surely prevent some fragmenting, 'cause "data" will be sorted in different place on the drive than installed programs and system files.
