    Hi Everyone
Here in the Uk I've Just bought a Aspire 9240 withn Vista home premium installed. When trying to connect to a pay as you go internet service the modem fails at the hanshake stage. The dial up modem installed is a Agere Hda Modem using the latest driver version 2.1.74.0. Has anyone else had this problem?? Can someone see if there own aspire (using Vista) connects as I feel it is a driver\vista problem.
Its been sent back three times now and they say there is nothing wrong with the modem. I say there is!!
    All help welcome.
    Thanks
    Sabenhaz

There is no such notebook series as the acer aspire 9240  I can't find it anywhere did you mean 9420?

Anyway what you have described sounds like a driver issue to me, but more so an issue with the driver interacting and mis-behaving with vista itself. Do you have another computer to test the connection on to perhaps rule out the possibility that the internet service provider is blocking you? If you are sure that isn't the case and acer have told you nothing is wrong with the modem (check with windows and see if it reports that the device is working properly). Then it is a driver problem within vista itself. But somehow I find that hard to believe as the acer drivers that came with your notebook should allow all components to fully function from the factory.

I am not sure how many users on here you will find that will be able to test dial-up functionality on vista for you as I suspect (I maybe wrong) that most users are on some kind of broadband internet service or using a router of some kind to get onto the internet.

    Hi Again
    Yes sorry its a 9420.
Have been in touch with tiscali (internet provider) and they have been through everything with me. Also tried Orange and the same thing happens. Acer say they have tested it three times and the modem is working correctly! i fear though that they test it with software and not through a phone line!!!! Its a bit like starting a car and not taking it for a test drive.
Just hope somone hear has the laptop with Vista on it who can give it a try for me,
    Regards
    Sabenhaz

I've seen a lot of machines that have been incorrectly supplied with the us modem cable in the UK, try to get hold of another cable if you can or arrange with customer services for a component swap.

    Hi Again
Sorry it was sorted before the reply. My comp rtd to me just 3 hrs ago with a new cable. But many many thanks Hairy Lee.
Having said that Acer should not be supplying brand new Laptops with cables that do not work and so render the machine not fit for purpose!!! They have given me endless heartache not to mention telephone bills!! Perhaps they could remedy this before selling any more and so not put other customers to endless problems.
    Regards and thanks all

    Hi Thanks
See where your coming from. Never mind its sorted now and its a great notebook. To be absolutly fair the guys on the phone did suggest using a diff cable..I did ...two more different ones that I own. Guess they must be American ones as well.
Any way give my thanks to everone in tech support...took a while but we got there. Good job the comp doesn't have a mileometer. Its done more than my car this month...LOL
    Regards
    Chris
