    Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, so please excuse me if this is a stupid question.

I have an Acer Aspire 5100 with 1GB of DD2 4200 memory (in one slot). A friend gave me 1GB of DD2 5300 memory, but I don't know if the two can be used together.

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Cheers,
    MarkJM

Im not 100% sure, but i think that they can but the 5300 might get underclocked to 4200, what kind of chipset are you running on?

    Yeah right ^^
I think the ATI Radeon Xpress Chipset 1100 supports PC2-4200 max, and the Xpress Chipset 1200 supports PC2-5300 max (I am not absolutely sure)

If you plan to upgrade anytime later, you could try out 2x1GB or 2x2GB PC2-5300 DDR2-667 (The pricing is similar to the PC2-4200 DDR2-533)

Otherwise, those two modules will work fine but at PC2-4200 frequencies (533MHz).

(You can check your notebook's chipset by downloading CPUz or PC Wizard 2008)
