HI all Im new here, just got my new Acer 1711 and I love it. Im going to do a full review with benchmarks so that we can have some numbers to crunch but as of now heres my intitial thoughts. The value is fantastic, you get a 2.8 Ghz Northwood pentium 4 on an 865 g chipset mb that supports the 533/800 mhz system bus , an 80 gig 7200 rpm hard drive, 512 megs of good ole desktop ddr 2700 ram, GeForce togo5700 graphics with 64 megs of ram on an 8X agp port, gig ethernet and 802.1G wireless, the impressive 17 inch tft screen, a 6 in 1 card reader and very impressive speakers for a dtr.
The machine is not light! if you are a small fellow this will be a tough lug but im a quite large fellow so it really is a good laptop for me. It is more likely a desk top replacement for most and would be good at LAN partys. it weighs about 15 pounds which really isnt bad but it isnt light.
It is large due to the 17 inch tft which is really about the size of a 19 inch crt!. The screen is clear and bright what a pleasure to look at. I have seen no ghosting in any game I have tried (Battlefield vietnam, City of heroes) I would give the screen a 10 out of 10 so far.
The machine itself seems quite fast but I need to run some benchmarks on it, it isnt as fast as say an athlon 3400 (not much is) but it is the fastest laptop(DTR) ive ever used. The cpu is a desktop cpu and you can tell it by how fast it is and how much power it uses. As far as I can tell the cpu can be upgraded to a 3.4 If anyone can give me more info on the cpu choices that would be great I do plan on upgrading the cpu and the owners manual even shows how to do it step by step.
The ram is upgradeable to 2 gigs (very nice) and can use ddr 333 or 400 and it uses standard desktop ram (once again nice, Im going to put a 1 gig stick in very soon ill do benchmarks with and without.
The hard drive is a 7200 rpm desktop unit! which makes for a very speedy access times but eats battery power faster than the standard slug slow laptop drive. Im going to pop the back off and find out who makes the drive I will post that later.
The video card is great for a laptop it is a Geforce go5700 for laptops and does very well in my seat of the pants gaming, it has 64 megs of dedicated memory the engine clock is 350 mhz and the ram is set at 600 mhz. Im not a big fan of nvidia but this set up seems to do well. The graphics card is upgradeable and hopefully Acer will offer an Ati Radeon 9700 mobil solution.
The battery life is very short but this unit wasnt really built for long off plug use. There is a place for an extra 12 cell battery and if used might give this unit a 2 hour battery life. I didnt really care about this as I was looking for a fast DTR and I accepted this shortfall.
I purchased this unit from notebookshop.com and was very pleased with there customer service I payed 1399.00 for this laptop and that is a HUGE bargain.
I emailed Acer about when and If they plan on offering a replacement videocard and was told not at this time this is a dissapointment if its true which I hope it isnt. If anyone knows if the videocard slot on the 1711 is the same as other laptops with replaceable video please let us know so we have a choice of where to get the new card.
I would give this laptop a 9 out of 10, the improvements would be a radeon 9700 mobil, and an athlon 64 (im an AMD guy so you might dissagree) but for the price id say this thing plane ROCKS.

Benchmarks are on the way. seeya later guys!
