Hi, I have had my Acer laptop for about 1 year with no problems until this morning. I used it last night turned it all off properly and then left it until the morning, when I came to it in the morning I turned the laptop on it booted up as normal all the way to the login screen but that is it. The touch pad and keyboard both seem to be unresponsive. I’ve tried using the touch pad. Pressing the Num Lock, pressing tab, putting in a few external keyboards and mice (mouse's). I have tried getting to the settings on start-up but because the keys won’t work I can't even find the problem. Hope that anyone can help.

i have an aspire 5100. i now have absolutely no response from my keyboard or touchpad on bios boot or in windows. the only place that they do respond is in linux. plugging in usb keyboard and mouse didn't work
either. fn-left and right sometimes work (changing brightness) when
    at windows screen.

why would keyboard work fine in linux but can't hit f2 to go to bios or
any keys to boot into safe mode. is this positively a hardware/mainboard
problem? if so, why this behavior?

i'm having this exact same problem. Acer 5102, XP, my wife had just installed Firefox and Second Life a couple days ago. Had a couple freeze-ups, hard booted. Now, nothing works. it still behaves normally as far as what happens on startup, except the keyboard, touchpad, and USBs do nothing. Don't even have any power coming to the USBs.

    Any resolution yet?
    Jody

In my opinion, this is really dodgy.

I had the exact same problem with my Acer Aspire 5670. The keyboard and mouse just stopped working after a year or so. However, I was able to go into system setup by pressing F2 very early on during boot. I changed the date to a year ago. It now works fine.

I don't know if this is a software bug on the version of Windows used or something more dodgy.

Try this and see if it works for you too.

This problem is not on this series ; you have this problem on 5100 and 3100 series so. Acer have not give a solution.
I have one solution you can use your windows with a pcmcia card usb; with an external usb keyboard and mouse.
it is the only solution for this time.

hi, i have the same problem, except ive alrady tried reinstalling xp and this keeps happening. ive used both acer recovery disc created when i bought my lap and an windows xp installation disc. i can go into f2 and f12 and start up, and can manage my partitions, delete, allocate new memory, mouse and keyboard work fine up until windows xp final set up wizard launches then again, the both stop working. usb mouse and keyboard work.

    what can this be???

The problem is the south bridge bga chip. It is a common failure on these laptops. The bad news is that the average person can not fix this problem. You need a rework station and have good knowledge of reballing BGA chips. The south bridge is also responsible for everyone with an aspire where the hard drive and or cd/dvd drive is not recognized. The sad part is the chip itself only cost around $20 but with labor the fix will cost about $150 at any good electronic repair shop.

I have an Acer 3100 with the same problem no mouse or keyboard is working. It is now a 3 yr old machine and I don't think it worth fixing. This is the second major thing. The first at least occurred during the warranty. I have tried the F2 and F12 but of course the keyboard not working.

Hay guys I don't know how this will work for you with the Acer but I have an Averatec 6200 series that had this exact problem, I disconnected the usb mouse, printer, bluetooth, power pack, internet connection and then fliped it over and unpluged the battery, with no power pack and no battery I then pushed and held the power button in for about 20 secounds, Averatec calls this a "hardware reset" and it worked for me. You might check with Acer for instructions on doing this as it might be different from mine but it is worth a try.

I have an Acer Aspire 5670 series (5672 to be exact) and pushing the power button for about 20 seconds with all unplugged and battery out, worked like a charm!

I am now back to my important computing duties. I will use this knowledge to fix this if I ever see this show up at my part time job (lol) or a friend

    Thank YOU! :D

Copied from another forum. This worked for my Aspire 5100.

Hard power-off (hold the power button until the laptop turns off)
    Unplug the AC adaptor
    Remove the battery
    Re-Plug in the AC adaptor
Hold ctrl and Esc. and then turn the power on.
You should arrive at a black (all black) screen.
    Hard power-off again,
    then turn the power on.

Then make sure your touch pad is "On" with the FN+F7 key combo.

Once it is working, go ahead and put the battery back in.
