    IMO,

it sounds like after you burned the BACKUP DISKS, the system somehow started to load the BACKUP DISK like the FACTORY RECOVERY DISKS restore the HDD to original status....

well to me it sounds like the BACKUP program started to restrore the HARD DRIVE after it completed with the backup..

what backup program were you using?? ACER's eRecovery?
*i'm willing to bet dollars vs. doughnuts* any takers

something about all this sounds incorrect...

a backup program should not have touched the HIDDEN PQSERVICE PARTITION.

what kind of backup did you do?
did you resize any partitions or remove the D: ACER_DATA partition?

that ALT F10 (D2D) backup procedure should work fine unless the D: partition was removed, or something modified the HIDDEN partition.

DO YOU HAVE A SET OF FACTORY RESTORE CDs?

This was the thing that actually happened....First of all the backup disk is in German...since I live in Switzerland which was a bummer...Well with a little bit of German I have...I followed the instructions which says...
copy the whole hard drive....I chose that icon and and directed it to be stored on my external hard drive....it started the backup process....
After the backup and after I restarted the computer,I found myself in the situation I am in right now...
Upon checking the my external hard drive on my wife`s notebook, I discovered that my bakcup information has taken over the whole drive and I could not even find my previously saved file except the backup ones....

Well, hopefully you'll be able to get your important files out of that backup that you made. But as for the laptop, I'd just go ahead and use your restore disks on it. By far that will be the simplest way to get yourself up and running again.

The easiest way to try and access data that is on the laptop drive is to remove it from the unit and then to connect it to another computer system via a SATA/PATA to USB cable unit (or 2.5" external HDD case).

Once you've got the data off the HDD that you need then just pop in your recovery disks and go.

Whatever exactly happened it borked your system something fierce.

due to ACER's CRAP software and the german language barrier,, you chose to make a backup of your ENTIRE HDD not BURN DISKS which brings up a SEPERATE MENU that allows you to choose between making a set of FACTORY RESTORE DISKS or DRIVER & APPLICATION DISKS,,,

so if you NEVER clicked the middle button at the BOTTOM of the main page of the eRECOVERY app (the button says " BURN DISCS" in english), then you never saw the second SCREEN that let you choose which disks to make (choices are "FACTORY RESTORE DISKS or DRIVER & APPLICATION DISKS" in english")

ACER SERIOUSLY NEEDS TO MAKE THIS SOFTWARE MORE USER FRIENDLY,
i've been building desktop PCs for 20 yrs,, and the ACER is my first laptop, but my family has had 3 or 4 previous laptops... despite my experience with PCs it took me 3 or 4 days until i noticed the eRECOVERY APP and then it took me almost 30 minutes to figure out the way to use the software to burn the RECOVERY DISKS...
