IPEX wide screen admin notebook PM 1.7GHz Win2000 512RAM DVDRW dual layer and an Acer XD1170D DLP projector.

I am having a lot of trouble getting the above two to work.
Message on projected image is: "input not supported".
I have changed the display settings and tried a number of different ones
    - no success.

The notebook has an ATI mobility radeon 9600/9700 display driver 2004.
Downloaded a later driver but that would not install. message: "setup
display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup"

The Acer people say there is a problem with the notebook, the IPEX people
say it is a problem with the Acer projector.

The projector works on other computers. The notebook successfully outputs
    to a monitor.

Does anyone know of a solution?
