ACER Aspire 1680 USB stop working 8 months ago. I REALLY would like to fix them. They have power...but when I plug anything in them, the computer doesn't recognize them. In the device manager, there are no conflicts....and the drivers are loaded. I was told that I might need to reload the chipset, but I got the link and loaded the program and it asked to reboot the computer, but then I don't know what to do next. I don't see a program associated with it or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated....Thanks in advance.

Go in the device manager and try uninstalling the usb host controllers, then reboot.

You sure you have(enough) power? Go to 'device manager', rightclick on 'Usb Root Hub' select 'Properties'. Go to the power tab. What's the total power. If you have usb devices attached, do they use any power?.

The chipset is not a software that you actually manipulate..its a package of drivers..But yeah reinstalling the chipset would've been my first advice.

I think atthegates is on to something there.

I would try to use an item in your USB that has its own power supply (as in it is plugged into the wall and doesn't use your laptop power). If that doesn't work still, then you can be sure that it isn't a power issue, but if it does work then you know what your problem is. :)

    Hope this helps!

i'm betting it's the USB board if that laptop has a seperate USB controller board...

but i've been wrong so many times in the past,, it would be nothing new for me...

first uninstall SP3... rebooot... then follow the directions below

my first move would be to uninstall all USB devices then reinstall the correct INTEL CHIPSET drivers for your motherboard's chipset!!!!

then if the USB goes back to working you should be able to put SP3 back with no trouble

    good luck

un-install al the host controllers including the enhanced controller.
reboot and windows should rebuild them using the chipset drivers.
but not all USB controller drivers are chipset driven :(
USB stack controllers can some times be downloaded from micro$oft.

sounds like time to consider backing up your data and then using your RECOVERY DISKS to reload to factory specs,,, IMO

    just a thought,

Did you tried to uninstall/delete all the stuff in usb section? If not - uninstall all, restart, and windows will reinstall all.
If it's possible to rollback to factory settings you may think of that possibility...if it doesn't work this would mean hardware issue..

    Hi,

I had posted something on another thread for a different model but this issue with the USB seems to be across the board.

Maybe we can all figure it out.

    Here's my post on it.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3542189&postcount=46

Removing the 2.0 controller makes my USB work, try it. I will try the power advice given in this thread when I get home tonight.

my USB was giving me trouble when laptop was first used and the bison bar orbicam was the culprit after a fresh install and removing all the acer junk. i found the bison bar software was running at start-up so when ever i used a usb port i got a conflict and the usb's where dead.
all i did was remove the bison bar software from start-up in msconfig and then removed it from the start-up file within windows. i did a restore back to factory a couple of weeks ago. and had to do the same again.

    it's just a maybe :D

In that case..I think it's definitely a hardware problem
