Its a good budget choice if you dont mind the battery life. The build quality is acceptable. I bought it to replace a desktop and it does its job pretty well. The graphics card is probably the worst for gaming but is capable of handling any other task. The cpu is speedy and surfing, word, older games shouldnt be a problem. Although I havent tried photoshop, I think it should be able to handle it. The fan is moderately quiet and it does not have a direct/open air intake. While this might make the fan turn on often the laptop can be kept on a soft surface like a bed and not overheat. The fan cannot be heard if there is any other external noise but is audible in a quiet room. It does not bother me.

There is a larger 8 cell battery available, but it costs around $150 if you buy directly from Acer, but can be found cheaper on ebay or other retailers. It will give around 2 - 2.5hrs. Pretty decent for a budget 15.4" laptop.

Check out the Acer 3003 review thread you can see opinions(good/bad) of many people.

I agree with Miner, it is a very nice laptop for doing what you want to do. There is another thread about this unit that is very lengthy but interesting, http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=17780

The battery is quite inadaquet but you can pick up a 4400 mah battery for about $80 on ebay.

I got mine about a week ago, so I'm still in the honeymoon phase, but I really am quite pleased with it. For the money and features, it is really hard to beat.
