I'm tempted to buy an Acer laptop but am worried that it won't last long. What kind of Acer laptop do you have an how long has it lasted without needing repairs? And what is their common major malfunction?

Ok I see 4 people voted. If you could tell me which models you owned and how long they lasted that would be appreciated.

Track record for me isn't quite good.

I've stayed as far away from Acers as possible, yet I once recommended 4810t for a friend because due recovering from surgery she wasn't allowed to lift over 2kg for months. That particular machine was repaired under warranty four times and after 2 year warranty expired so did the hdd. At least three times the motherboard died in various ways.

Not so long time ago my colleague sold one of those new ultrabooks, it was basically DOA but since it sat in unopened box for a month after being sold it had to be sent in for repairs. In this case it was faulty power jack, causing on/off contact continously. That was the only Acer unit sold for months.

There has to be some working models too. I just seem to attract the faulty ones near me.

I haven't voted since there is no option of "never/not yet" which would apply to the current one.

Aspire 5020 (bought on 2005) had a mobo malfunction after 5 years which is acceptable. It also had issues with cracks on the lid- this was an old "silver" Acer. Back in the days Acers were sort of crap.

After that there were two Aspire 6920G still working (4 years, bought in 2008). I had to replace an MXM module (bumpgate issue). That's nVidia's fault not Acer's. Unfortunately 9500M GS expired after three years so warranty was already over.

The third one is Aspire 5740G (bought at the beginning of 2010)- two and a half years old at this point. I've replaced the battery with a high capacity one since the original wouldn't hold the charge long enough for my needs. I wouldn't consider it a malfunction though.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another notebook from Acer assuming it was bang-for-the-buck sort of machine. I usually aim for that (see 5740G) and I'm pretty happy.

I've had mine for over 2 years now ( aspire 5740G ). Spilled twice beer on it, dropped few times but it's working fine still. Only thing i have changed is HDD, 3 times cause apparently 5400rpm drives can't keep up with the pace i need.

i bought it cause it was beast compared to other laptops in same price but unfortunately its screen is below average.

Any laptop will last for good if you keep it cool.

    Acer 3820tg:
It lasted like 2hours without repair, it was freezing after few minutes. They replaced it for the new one, this new one had bad pixel, they changed the screen, then i had problems with GPU driver, the screen was turning off by itself for few seconds, they fixed it and now i again have this problem. I hope I will get the new device this time, maybe S3 ;)

Basically, it seems Acer's reliability went on a downhill ride after they dropped MXM.

I've had my 6930G for years - I've updated the processor and mxm card, and added a second hard drive.

Hopefully this won't have jinxed it!

I have been using my Acer Aspire 5610z since mid 2007, it has gone through many make overs but I didn't do any upgrades due to any failure or malfunctions, still going strong with recent Windows 8 Pro upgrade

Thank you for the replies. I guess I just have to go with a laptop that I like and hope I don't get a lemon! I don't know if it will be an Acer though. We'll see. I really liked the Timeline series but I can't find it for sale :(

I had a TimelineX 3820TG for 2 years. It had a small problem with a shorted webcam in the begining. It went to Acer's Depot in Temple, Texas where the techs not only replaced the Cam, they swapped a synaptics touchpad for the Alps. For the next two years, I had no further issues.

I have an AS9810 that has lasted 5 years without needed to be serviced and it's still being used . I have an AS 8950G that had the screen go blank back in July. I purchased it in Feb 2011 with a 1 year extended warranty. The problem was a LCD cable was bad and it was sent to Newegg's warranty company and was fixed.
