Ok, so I tried my desktop speakers on this laptop since these internal speakers are simply horrible even to my standards. However, they didn't work!

I'm now thinking of buying these speakers:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836121123

My question is, since my desktop speakers didn't work (they came with my HP running on PIII back in 2001).
Will these ones work on my laptop?
Or do I need to buy a sound card also?
If I do buy a sound card, is the 5 in 1 card reader supposed to read the sound card, or is there another PCI slot located somewhere?

Sorry about all the questions, but I want to install external speakers so bad!

I have headphones, but I prefer speakers.

If your desktop speakers won't work, then another new speakers is most likely NOT to work. The questions that I'm going to ask might sound dumb (I'm in no way insulting you, it's just that the little things go a long way). Do they work fine on your desktop? Are you sure your sound is not in mute? Did you plug in the external speakers into the wall? Have you turned the volume up on both the notebook and the speaker? Did you put it in the right jack (the one in which you plug in your headphones)?

You can plug these straight to the audio out port of your laptop. If you are going to get a 5.1 system, then you need other cables (probably included). 2.1 is 2-speakers, 1 woofer, 1 audio in (on most 3 piece systems)

Ok, I took these pictures using my crappy webcam from the 5672. As you can see, there is no plug for these speakers, just the orange thing which I believe you're supposed to plug into the headphone jack, which doubles up as a speaker jack on the 5672wmli.

The little orange plug as you can see, has a little speaker symbol. Dunno if that helps.

Like I said, these speakers are old and I don't have any other speakers to test. It CAME with my HP pavilon back in 2001. They were attached on the sides of the monitor. THe orange plug attached to the back of my computer tower.

So to answer your questions Amol, I did everything you asked. These speakers work fine on my old desktop.

I assume these old speakers are unamplified and have no power port?

If you can't get sound out of those speakers at full volume, you will need amplified speakers, like the ones you linked to earlier.

Are you sure you're plugging them into the right port on your notebok? Orange is not the normal color for stereo output, and it doesn't plug into the orange port on your notebook, it should plug into the black one on the far right.

Hmm, here's an idea - do those speakers have a USB port? Some speakers draw power from there.

Hmmm, once again, these speakers are OLLLLDDDDDD generic ones. The orange plug you see, is the only plug for the speakers. There is no USB port. My old computer had an orange port to plug in these speakers. I've plugged it into every port possible on my 5672. I'm guessing these speakers are just too old to work on my laptop. Or there isn't enough power from my laptop to run these speakers. The ones that I'm buying has a plug that plugs into the wall, so I'm just guessing that will be enough for my laptop to run the new speakers since it's getting power from the wall, not directly from the laptop......

turn up the volume all the way and connect them to the connector on the right on the front of the laptop

Well, before you spend money on getting new speakers, I suggest you try out other external speakers so that you are on the safe side. If you can get two different types (one that draws power from USB and the other that draws power from the wall outlet),it'd be awesome. I suggest going over to a friend's house and hook up your notebook, or something along those lines.

If your headphones work then a pair of external amplified (batteries or AC powered) speakers will. I have a set of Logitech 2.1s that work great.
