Have had the Aspire 1662 for a year and a couple of months now and have been very happy with the machine so far. However, its begun to give me problems which I am guessing is due to heat problems.

The computer just turns off, doesnt follow shut down procedure. There is a period of a few seconds when everything freezes and then it just shuts down. This happens only when its doing heavy intensive tasks like multimedia, heavy simulations and the kind. Rebooting and constantly working causes it to go through the same loop till it gets to the point when it turns off at the boot screen itself and emits a few loud screeching beeps before it turns off. The beeps occur only if it turns off before windows boots up. If it turns off while windows is up and running it does so without any beeps. I am guessing its heat issues because the presence of a cooling pad increases the time it is able to run a process without turning off. Disabling the second thread on the cpu helps as well. However, the fan seems to be working.

My initial reading would be that the fan is functioning at lower rpms which is not sufficient since its a P4 3.0 HT processor.

Any ideas anyone? I saw a similar post dated a year back but not help. Any service manuals available for this laptop ?
