    Hey guys,

I'm brand new to laptops and just bought an Acer Inspire 6920G and love it!

The only problem is that it came with Vista and keeps giving me problems. So i got out my windows xp cd and tried to reformat it. But after i select to install XP, i get a screen saying that it was unable to find a hard disc and that i might need to run a setup or diagnostic. My computer shows an ACER(C) drive and then a DATA(D) drive, but my windows xp doesn't see it ;[

Im not sure what to do because i really want to install XP. Thanks guys!

    Welcome to NBR.

XP can't see your hdd because its a SATA drive and XP doesn't have native support for SATA drives. So you'll need to insert(slipstream) a SATA driver in the XP cd. If you don't know how to do that follow this guide. Yes, it's for Aspire 5315 but will work for your 6920G too.

And before you do that, make sure you've got a Vista recovery DVD burned so you have something to fall back on if something goes awry.

What are your issues with vista? Wouldn't it be much easier and faster to fix that?

wow u guys are fast and great help!

i believe i should download the x86 version of vista? Since i have a dual 2.4 intel core?

Vista ran fine when i first got it, but I run a lot of high end programs and they are very sluggish, crash or freeze often and other small annoyances. I don't want to install XP, and i like vista, but the problems seem to happen on a regular basis. I'm not sure what fixes there are for that, i've had friends simply tell me to install XP and dump vista for now.

    Thanks again guys!

Did you check for updqates to the programs you are having issues with? Which apps are we talking about here?

Seriously, the 'advice' from people to ditch Vista... Since SP1 was released, most compatibility issues are gone (as long as the apps are up to date). Same goes for drivers, make sure they are up to date as well.

Yes, you should get the X86 version, since the vista installation that came pre-installed with your laptop is 32bit.

    Regards,

    M.

What high-end programs are giving you problems?
We might be able to help you keep your installation of Vista AND fix any issues.

Oh, and I meant to use the Acer eRecovery tool to burn a few DVDs that will allow you to return your system to a factory default state if something goes kaplooey (very scientific term).

Hey guys! sorry for the long reply, life has been nuts.

I've been going online and trying to update everything, and Vista downloads everything but seems to have problems installing a lot of them, they say "Failed"

Ya i definitely don't want to ditch Vista unless i run out of all other options. I should look for updates on my programs, i haven't really done that yet.

    The programs I'm using now:
    Photoshop
    Illustrator
    In-Design

main problem i have is them freezing, sometimes they run fine and i can 2 or 3 programs at once of these and its fine, other times, just running 1 freezes the program and sometimes my entire computer. It often happens when closing it or exiting out of it.

have yet to install or use these yet, but will:
    Maya
    After Effects

    thanks!

You shouldn't have any issues with those apps. I use the CS3 version of those apps myself and haven't encountered any issues.

    1. is Vista fully up to date? (including service pack 1)
    2. are your Adobe apps up to date (which version are you using?)

He said above that he has problems installing things.
Are you sure you have administrative privileges on your system? Or any software that would prevent "unwanted" software changes?
