Hi, I have an Acer Aspire 2012Wlmi and just recently I've noticed that when I put in a DVD (movie, data or blank), the dvd-rom makes a lot of struggling noises and then doesn't recognise the disc in the drive at all. I tested this with cds instead of dvds, and it read them fine! Is this a sign that my laser is damaged? (or does the drive use the same laser for cd and dvd) or could this be a software problem? Can someone please help me out?

    Thanks..

Looks like there could be a problem with the drive itself. I'd recommend getting the drive replaced. Regarding the types of DVD's used, I wouldn't put blank discs into your drive, this will make the drive search pretty hard to try to locate a vaild disc. In the end, it'll just fail and not find any suitable media in the drive.
