So I have been playing halflife 2 and gary's mod and all that jazz. Occasionally all of the sudden it will crash with "iderect3dDive9" error and sometimes it just lags and bogs down randomly without crashing. It does not seem to matter what I do with the graphics, setting them really low just makes it play a lil longer before crashing. I do not have any problems with any of these games on my desktop. Any input would be great.

ps. I noticed that I am an idiot and spelled Aspire wrong in the title after I hit submit.

That happened to me to with my Intel Intergrated 900 graphics, and I found out that it was due to overheating. Atleast thats what it was for me, I set the res down and it worked fine.

It doesn't seem to be overheating, since I can alt tab out of it and the computer is still running fine, I would think if it was overheating then everything would have a probelm.

If your using the Omega 6.9 I would think thats the culprite. The 6.9 series have been a bad experience for me. I've also heard that some people were having problems with Counter Strike source. I would try a diferent set that not 6.9's (If that's what your using).

I changed back to the ATI drivers, and have had no problems with the directx error, but it still locks up when I have it set for settings this laptop should easily be able to do. I haven't had problems with other games that are just as graphically intense or even more so.

It may be a update from steam that screwed it up. Are you still on Ati 6.9's? I would maybe try 6.8 series and see if that helps any. Unfortunatly my brother does not want Steam installed on his comp or I would check it out for myself. Maybe turn off HDR if your trying to use that. Maybe try DHzer0point 0.68 Release from Driverheaven or something (I have not personally tryed). I also have like a sound stutter loop lockup bug when I play Half life 2 from time to time, but be patient and it goes away(if thats the prob). I wouldn't be surprised if it was the Hypermemory deal that acer uses. I suspect a driver problem since I've heard source engine and ati 6.9 driver problems. Those problems are also coming from people who own acers. Good luck.

I installed the 6.10 drivers from ATI's website last night and tried Half Life 2: Lost Coast, video stress test, and it still locks up. But I played nfs Carbon on high everything at 1024x768 since it doesnt support 1280x800 and it ran like a dream. So I am pretty sure it has something to do with halflife 2 and how it works with the mobile x1600. Let me know if you have anymore input.

    Hello,

This site has been very helpful for me, so I decided to give something back by joining the forums.

JohnnyT, I was having the same issue with my 5672 laptop (spec'd exact same as yours) - I'd start playing HL2 or CS:S and I'd get that strange error. I ruled out overheating, as the whole machine did not become unresponsive, so I thought it might be a driver issue.

Upon further digging, I noticed on the Steam support site that this is caused by an update to the Source Engine, and that anyone who is having the problem should open a ticket with them so it can be fixed.

Rather than wait for them, I have a way of getting around this problem which has, as of today, worked consistently - I haven't seen that error since I started doing this.

Basically, in the Steam Games list, go to the properties for HL2, and then the Launch Parameters. Add "-h 600 -w 800" to force the game to start in 800x600 resolution. Once the game loads, change the res. back to 1280x800. It's a pain, but it's worked every time for me.

Let me know how this works out, or if the 6.10 drivers help!

Wow, thanks 4 the info. Hopefully they'll resolve that issue in there next update. Have you tryed the new catalyst 6.10 yet? Thanks again for you input. If my brother ever decides to buy that gamefor his laptop, I'll keep that in mind. :)
