Can you get the message that the BSOD has displayed? That is really important...

Do you have your Windows Vista disc? If so, boot from it and choose Repair Your Computer > Startup Repair.

No. It only repairs the Vista Boot Manager, I believe.

    Ah, I see.

    Progress Report,
Windows has found the boot problem and is using "Startup Repair" to repair the problem.

    According to the diag,

    Root Cause Found,
A recent installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting

Then 2 boxes about sytem restore the 1 box about system files integraty.

Ouch. Well, yes, installing a new OS on top of your existing one would remove your partitions... unless, that is, you have all of your files on a separate partition than Vista. In which case you could simply install XP over Vista and save your files.

I would look for other solutions before jumping to this conclusion, however.

Oh, awesome. If I were you, I'd reinstall Vista on partition 0 (or drive 'c'). When installing, make sure you select the first partition, and not your other two - doing so will erase them.

If done correctly, your files/programs should be fine.

I have no idea. I'm not much of a command line guy. ;)

You should be able to install XP MCE over Vista without ruining your files/programs as well. It's all a matter of choosing the correct partition when you go to install it.

If you don't have the disc you could borrow one... or, assuming your notebook came with XP MCE, you could request a restore disc from Acer.

Yes, it will ask you which partition you'd like to install on. It should look like this:

A safe option to backup your files would be to boot the machine with a Linux liveCD (Ubuntu 7.04 is perfect for the task http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download ). Assuming you have another machine to use download it, then burn the ISO file in a blank CD and make your computer boot from it. After it has booted it may recognize your partitions automatically and allow you to browse them, then the trick would be to take out your files, if you have a USB hard drive it is quite easy (or even with USB keys).

From my experience by default Acer Recovery DVD (if you created it when prompted) only formats the first partition. That occurs in my laptop, and I would expect the same to happen in yours, anyway there is no warranty.

    Good luck.
    Joe.

If you want further details of how to rescue your files using Linux PM me (or if you run into problems related with it).
