Hello, I'm a newbie to this forum. It's a great site and I've learned a lot, but now I'm stumped. I picked up an Acer Aspire 3005wlci the other day. The O.G. owner is a vivid gamer and had a whole mess of stuff on this computer (not to mention a few viruses too). Anyhow, one day after he installed a program (I don't know which one) the screen suddenly went blank. You can still adjust the brightness and you can hook up an external monitor. to this. Every now and then when booting it up you can see bits and pieces and then nothing. Well after trying everything I know, like opening it up and making sure all the connections were secure and using the hot keys <Fn>+<F5> and <F6> still nothing.I went into the Acer eSettings and adjusted the Monitor section, which I think is part of my new problem (read on). Then I had a brain storm!! I decided to bring the machine back to its original factory state, then I did a system recovery- thinking maybe after wiping out any bad programs the screen would work. Well after the recovery the external monitor will only turn on for a few seconds. I thinks it's because I did the recovery and I should have gone to the Acer eSettings and turned on the external monitor part. But I can't because I can't see what I'm doing since the LCD will not come on. Please any H!E!L!P! would be greatly appreciated.

Are you able to see anything when the BIOS is loading?

When the BIOS is loaded the first screen "INFO" is very visible but the LCD is acting weird. On the bottom of the screen, where the function legend is, it is going from dark to readable and repeats very quickly. I also noticed that when I try to go from the BIOS "Info" to the BIOS "Main" or any other function on top, the LCD screen goes partially dark leaving only the top visible. It's also taking a few seconds to go from BIOS "Info" to BIOS "Main" and so forth but as I move to "Security" to "Boot" it lightens a bit and then darkens. Thanks for the response.

I've had a similar problem with an old HP laptop. When the LCD was open, the display was either garbled or would randomly switch from dark to bright. I figured out that it was a problem with the hinges. So to view the screen normally, I could only open the screen about 30 degs... that didn't really help a lot but it allowed to connect an external monitor and switch outputs.

I'm not sure if you problem is related, but when you are in the BIOS screen, try to check the display quality with various degrees of the laptop screen open. Hope this helps.

Did you try giving Acer support a call?

Up Date. After further messing with this laptop I decided to take it apart and inspect the cable that connects the mother board and the screen together. When I would press on the cable the video would appear to improve. So I thought why not try another video cable, it couldn't hurt. I searched and found one on an auction site for 19.00 plus shipping. After receiving it I installed it and with my fingers crossed, I turned this Acer Aspire 3005 on and it worked like new. I want to thank "CountAltec" and everyone on this site for they H!E!L!P! You are welcome!

Now I wonder if I can fix that monitor connection on the old HP laptop. Not sure if it is worth the effort as the thermal sensor on the motherboard no longer works.. so the fan never turns on and the machine overheats after a while.
