I've had an Aspire 3515 with Visto O/S for several months now.
If the system sits idle for several minutes, it makes a dreadful whoosihng
sound along with a video ad of some sort. Please - please, how do I get
rid of this annoying program? Is this some sort of screen saver?

That's what it sounds like. Look at the screensaver options. ;)

Ah good, I'd performed a search on 'screensaver' with negative results but
fortified by the previous suggestions tried again. Found it at CONTROL PANEL - PERSONALIZE - SCREEN SAVER. Now no more Dreadful Whooshing Sounds! Thanks guys!
