For some reason, NTI states that I have a hardware error when I try to burn a DVD or CD. Does this mean that the burning capabilities of my 5102 are shot? I would hate to go through Acer Support, as I am a college student, and they take forever to get the laptops back to you.

Try using a different software programs to write the discs. If they don't manage to write the disc, then you most likely have a problem with the DVD Drive. In that cse, if your notebook is still under warranty, then you can get Acer to repair it, but they will probably take some time. Alternatively, ou could purchase your own drive, and install it, although I'm not sure if this would void your warranty.
