Thanks to Bigblock's advice, i accessed my dvd rom drive (the panasonic/matshita UJ 845 D.) It spat some tiny white piece of plastic, but is still useless aside from that.

I can't seem to find an exact replacement for it on the market - the closest i get is UJ 845 B. Does anyone here have a clue whether i can switch one for the other ? Or : what do i have to check on to determine by myself whether they're interchangeable ? I'm aware that's the sort of questions which would only be asked by someone who never did this before, but that's exactly the situation i'm in, and there's no chance i get one of these drives but by ordering it and having it delivered, so there's no chance to check it so to speak "on the spot."

    Thank you in advance.
