My Aspire 9412 is only 10 months old and both of the lid hinges broke this week. Has anyone else had this problem?

Welcome to the club. It seem to be pretty common with that particular design... The warranty should cover it. Did you notice a crack in that area before the hinge finally failed?

I don't want to belong to this club!

I'm sure there was but I never noticed until the right hinge snapped when I opened it. Upon inspection I saw the crack on the left side.

You shouldn't have bought acer then lol. The hinge breaking is something to expect with the design used by acer before they introduced the gemstone design. The warranty may or may not cover it: when my travelmate 4404 hinges broke(left site too) they told me that it was my fault and it would cost me... Some people got their acer with broken hinges repaired free of charge... Call Acer and ask them if the warranty will cover it.

give Acer a call, let them know that the hinges are starting to crack. They will set it up for repair. Depending on how badly the damage is, they will repair it with no charge or call you asking for a repair charge.

They should fix it, I had plenty of cracked hinges and they fixed it no problem.
