    Hey,

Ive recently been having a lot of problems with my Acer Aspire 5102.....
Anyway, the most recent trouble has to do with the notebook's integrated graphics card - the ati xpress x1100. It seems that ati/amd does not support this card on their support/download site; the only drivers available for it are on Acer's own support page. However, when I tried installing these drivers (after a HD failure and Win XP Pro clean install), I found that the installer would not run. I had to resort to installing the X200m's drivers from the Ati site.... these drivers seemed to work well for a short time until now...

Ive been expereincing a lot of crashes leading to blue screens prompting me to either turn of hardware acceleration or to install the latest drivers for my graphics card....

Can someone tell me how to get rid of the blue boxes around all my desktop shortcuts (and no, they aren't selected)? or is that a problem caused by this graphics card driver problem?

    Many thanks,

    ~nix

As far as your shortcuts, that's just a Windows setting.

Go to Control Panel\Performance and Maintenance\"Adjust Visual Effects"

Down near the bottom of the "Visual Effects" tab, put a check in the box that says: "Use drop down shadows for Icon labels on Desktop".

It's not the Theme that is showing that.
The solution I gave above your post will (should), work. ;)

(Edit) Oops! I just saw your edit after I replied.....we're playing tag here.
    Hehe...sorry. :)

I recomend bios update and installation drivers from ati site.

100% good are old drivers from acer site and you should find newer drivers on recovery cd which was fabric preinstalled

If you woluld like plaing games you could try omega drivers http://www.omegadrivers.net/

ATI will NOT support acer notebooks, some how it checks if your system is acer and quites the drivers installation, the only drivers availble are from acer and other driver download sites minus ati website.

Not only does ATI not support acer notebooks when it comes to chipset or graphics drivers but the drivers found on the ATI download site for the X1100 are desktop drivers and not meant for use on a notebook. They will install but I have found in the past that instabilities and random BSOD can happen. Your best bet is to stick with the acer provided driver (no matter how old it is), either that or give omegas a try.

I agree with Evolution on this.

In fact, I have a 5102 myself, which was originally reporting my X1100 an as M200 (Very common for those of us who bought one a year or so ago).
And even today they have it listed as a "frequently asked question" under support on the Acer support site.

I downloaded the ATI driver they have on the Acer website (under "ATI Chipset & Display Driver" for the 5100 series), and not only was it correctly identified as an X1100 after that, but I've never had any problems with the driver either.

Try this link, and select the Aspire 5100 for the Drivers available.

Hmmm, wonder how the ATI IGP driver package worked on my 5102 then? I'm using a clean-install retail version of Vista. With this setup my problem was the opposite - the Acer drivers would not install.
