Aspire One - any way to display 1024x768 w/o external monitor?

The native resolution of the Aspire One is 1024x600; however, is there any way to display 1024x768 without needing an external monitor (by "scrolling" the screen, etc)?

I need to get several of these to provide remote support and most of the time the 1024x600 resolution will be fine. However, one of the applications that we need to support requires a minimum of 1024x768 resolution, and since these will be used to provide support from outside the office, more often than not we won't have the ability to plug them into an external monitor. We won't need this display size too often, so even if it's annoying (as a "scrolling" screen would be), having this ability means the difference between being able to purchase the Aspire One vs having to get the HP 2133.

    Thanks!

    - Bill

There may be a way to scale the resolution to 1024x768, I'm not too sure about though. If the LCD panel doesn't support that resolution, then it may be a real PITA to get 1024x768 on it.

Something tells me you'd rather want the 2133 anyway, if the native resolution issue with *one* app would change your mind regarding which laptop to buy, I'd be willing to bet that scrolling in that *one* app would also been enough to change your mind.

You'll probably be better off with the 2133 if one of the main purposes of your purchase is for that application that needs 1024x768.

The main purpose is really just to provide remote after-hours support on servers and systems for our clients. The bulk of the work will be remote command-line access via SSH, with some occasional remote desktop access. (They won't be heavily used, but when these clients do have problems, we need to be able to get in remotely with something more powerful and easier to type on than a smartphone.) The central application for which all this support is being provided is indeed the one that requires the 1024x768 screen resolution, but realistically we won't need to actually log on to it very often. For those few times, scrolling around would be fine, assuming that the Aspire will actually allow us to set a virtual screen size of 1024x768 and let us scroll around on the physical screen of 1024x600.

I actually do like the HP unit (esp the keyboard); however, I'm concerned about the speed of the HP's. From the reviews, they look to be MUCH slower than any of the Atom-based netbooks. (That, and the fact that they cost almost twice as much as the Aspires when you run XP.)

There is a way to set a higher resolution then the display actually support, this will result in scrolling.

If you right click the desktop, select "Properties" and click the "Settings" tab, in there click "Advanced". The Display and adapter properties should appear. In "Monitor" tab, uncheck "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" and click apply. Then go to "Adapter" tab and click on "List All Models..." button. In here select the desired resolution, color depth and frequency, click OK and Apply to test. Ok again if youre satisfied.
