It seems good but keep in mind this:

    "Manufacturer refurbished"

That means it already had troubles...

That might be consequence of "Manufacturer refurbished"...
When my 8600M gs died, every time I would try to install nvidia driver I would get message "Device not recognized" and drivers couldn`t install... On standard VGA driver it worked with no problems but without 3d acceleration, only 2d so no games could be played...
Did you try latest driver version from nvidias site? If it doesnt work try moded drivers from:

Do what Arminator said - go grab a modified driver from LaptopVideo2Go to force installation.

As long as the BIOS recognizes it and Windows displays, this is a tentative success. Now we just need to get the Nvidia drivers installed.

i have bought that very item from ebay and it works a treat. Bare in mind he could have chosen refurb because broken laptops have been stripped and the graphics were fine. Also he warranties them so no no real gamble as far as I can tell here. Finally it is a nice card, upgraded from a 9600m gt ddr2 and gained 1500 3dmark 06 points + able to run COD MW2 in high detail versus medium now.

Majorwedgy, what is your model? Post some screenshots (HWmonitor, GPU-Z, etc.) in the Acer MXM thread and I can add your computer as a successful upgrade to the list.

Got it working with a 6935G screen shot attached,no mods required, although there were no memory chips on the rear of the card, unlike the ddr2 model so I simply left the thermal pads on attached to nothing at all, standard heatsink etc were used

Ah, okay. The Aspire 6935G was sold with the 9600M GT GDDR3 anyway, so it's not as big of a story as getting the 9600M GT to work on a different machine.

Good to know you got it working, though.

Have you cleaned out your fan intake and exhaust?
When you performed the upgrade, did you apply thermal compound to the GPU core where it touches the heatsink?

76 is not a good idle temperature for a laptop.
Are you absolutely certain that your cooling system is properly reassembled?
I'd go back and take a second look if I were you.
Remember, too much thermal compound can hamper heat transfer - stick to a paper-thin layer if possible.
