I got my Mom an Acer laptop for her bday just over 90 days ago. She and my siblings use the hell out of it and I have been fixing it for her every so often but this time its a bit more serious. They seem to have somehow killed the charger to the point that the little light on the charger itself doesn't turn on. I am looking for a replacement at store.acer.com and they to only sell 2 different kinds:

    65w - acer store - Product Detail
    90w - acer store - Product Detail

Neither of these seem to list the exact model number of hers but the only thing telling me her model number is the small print on the bottom saying "Aspire 5740/5340 Series". The model number is MS2286 if that helps.

Her dead charger lists both amps and volts I think in the form of "OUTPUT: 19w == 3.42A(3.42a)" but doesn't seem to list watts. I believe V = W/A so therefor VA = W so 19v * 3.42a = 65w so I think thats the one I need.

So my question is, is that 65 watt one the one I need? Also, is buying a new one directly from acer my best option?

    Thanks in advance, Nick

Yes you need the 65W PSU although there's no need to buy it from Acer.
All (or almost all) Acer notebooks use the same connector and several other manufacturers use the same one so there are many 65W PSUs with Acer-compatible connector/plug that will work fine for you.
Look for something on eBay- there should be several options available and these would be most likely cheaper than Acer-direct purchase.
