I have a aspire 5100 that kept going to blue screen and eventually overheated one day( last summer) and hasnt been messed with since. I put it on a shelf! Now I want to see if I can fix it and give it to my Niece to use but I am only taking baby steps to improve the issues.

I noticed when I shut down the laptop it stayed on after I closed it. When I opened it and touched the spot above the heat core, I indented the plastic because it was so hot. I removed the battery and set it on the shelf.

Since, I've turned it on and it would start to boot up but then was going to black screen w/cursor blinking in top left.
I did the alt + f10 and it checked and did all the disk checking settings, completes and goes to boot up but I get to the sign on spot for users and I have no F prompts, keyboard, mouse options, nothing!

I did have use of the arrows previous to the Alt F10 restore I did, because I was able to F2 and get to the "setup up prompts". I was able to manuver around that.

Now I am unable to use the F2 prompt to get me into Safe mode or any of it because i lost all use of the kboard and mouse.

I have not been able to get my back-up disc to be recognized because I cant get to the Bios screen to change the order in the start-up

Sorry about the short book. :rolleyes2:

i think you may have to remove the keyboard and see if it has a melted connection by the sound of it.
or try a usb keyboard see if that works.
but it sounds like you will have to open the laptop and replace the heatsink paste, and give it a good clean.

and its not a serious issue until we tell you it is :)

    it sounds serious :(

    best of luck
    Phil :D

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll check it out. I've done a good cleaning on it however I could complete disassemble it and that would make it an even more intense cleaning. I would rather not though. Hopefully I don't find an leads burnt out
    I'll keep u posted
    Thanks again
