Is there a firmware update or a known issue with this? The laptop is pretty new and never been abused. While plugged in it has no issues or while it's using it's battery in full power mode. But if you set it to power save mode it freezes within minutes of bootup.

Does anyone have a link to acer's firmware etc? This is a US model

Yes the laptop came with windows vista. It was having this problem so I uninstall ed and did a fresh reinstall of vista. This time I did not put any acer sofware on the laptop. It freezes even with the microsoft vista settings for low power.

I see the link given says windows xp.

    Me too... but just recently!
Can't find what has changed though to get this annoying bug.
Last thing would be a standard Windows Update (Vista Home Premium).
See sig below for laptop type.

I did a complete windows automatic update...seems to be helping so far...not sure why or how this may have fixed the problem but the few times I used the computer on battery power I had NO more locking up or freezing etc.

Have you tried contacting Acer about it? It may be a widespread problem and they might have a solution for you.

I bought an Acer 5100 sept 2006. It had Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 on it and I bumped it up to 2 gigs of ram. AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50(1.60GHz) Super Multi ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 IGP..yada yada yada. The CDDVD burner took a dump first and I sent it back to Acer and they replaced it. then it started locking up. Completely freezing to the point where I could not even turn it off or on. Sent it back and they put in a new motherboard. So now I have a new mother board and a new cd/dvd burner unit. I get it back and running and bam the f%^king dvd/cd burner takes another dump. then just last night it froze up again. Warranty is gone, but since they just did a repair on it, they extend it another 90 days. Now what? Not sure, I'm going to uninstall all microsoft updates i did to it, then see what happens. I'll keep you posted. I think its a lemon.....I just want a laptop that I can edit photos and use the web.

Sounds like the replaced component is faulty yet again. Have it replaced before the 90 day extended warranty is up.

Yes that is what I plan on doing. 2 tech support guys at Acer told me that I should uninstall service pack 2 and not do any windows updates. One told me that he runs Windows media center and never does any updates. I bring this up because I told them after I got it back the 2nd time I told them I applied all the recommended microsoft updates and that was when the CD/dvd player would not work. I did that and it still did not work. Now this morning, I physically removed the cd/dvd drive from the machine, reinstalled it and it worked. Bad connection, I think so.
Hopefully they will fix it this time. My patience with this machine is running thin.
