    Hello,

I've had my Aspire 2000 for about 6 months and I'm generally happy with it (except for the stupid home/end keys) but the wireless has driven me crazy.

Currently, the wireless works for a while (many hours) and then no longer can connect to either of my wireless access points. The only way I have found to solve it is a reboot. I let Windows manage my wireless, but have noticed that the supported ProSet stuff is VERY OLD.

Now I must admit that this is much better then the situation in the past. Before I updated to Bios v1.07 the loss of networking would be followed fairly quickly (~1 min) with a nasty crash which forced me to remove the battery to reboot!

Would buying the Intel 802.11g card help?

Anyone else out there in the same boat?

This kinda sounds like a driver problem. I had constant disconnects on an HP notebook I had and the only solution was new drivers. You may want to try checking the Intel website for updated drivers for your WiFi. I'm assuming it's an Intel 802.11b card, if so, you can get compatible drivers from Intel. This might fix the problem.

The problem may no exist if you got a new card because it will be using new drivers. Plus it'll be a different card.

The problem may also be the hardware itself. If still in warranty, you may want to try sending it in for service. After trying to troubleshoot the problem first.

    Basic Troubleshooting Steps:
    1. I'd recommend removing and then re-installing the drivers for your WiFi (try to get the latest drivers from Intel/Acer).
    2. Download all the latest drivers and burn onto CD or store on USB drive, you're gonna need it
    3. Re-install the OS from scratch if you have an XP CD. I would't recommend using Acer's Restore CD, I believe they use an image rather than a standalone OS CD.
    4. After re-installing the OS, install the drivers one at a time, start with video then network (LAN & WiFi) and see if this disconnects you or locks your system. Use for a while without installing anything else (drivers, apps) or making any tweaks
    5. If everything is working, perform a Windows Update and download all necessary updates.
    6. Just keep going bit by bit and use the system in-between until all the drivers/software is reloaded. At the end of a very long troubleshooting process, you should have either fixed the problem or found out exactly what is causing the problem (drivers/software/hardware) and then take the correct action.

    Good Luck!

i have the aspire 2000 and had the same problems you mentioned. But it seems that windows XP service pack 2 fixed my problems for now.
    Do you have SP2 installed?

I have the same problems. They are worse when the machine is running on battery. Is that the same with you? Did the proposed fix work for you?

    I am running SP2.

The problem seems much better now, (actually, the BIOS change helped the most), but it did hit me again yesterday.

Its amazing Acer has such problems with a standard chipset.

Interesting; did you check the acer support site for the wireless driver update (for SP2 reliability)?
